Report:30-year old Italian Sergio Barbero, achieved the most important victory of his career when he won the 79th edition of the Tre Vale Varesine (the 3 Valleys of Varesine) which was raced over a distance of 200 kms in the Varèse region. Usually working for team captain Marco Pantani in the major stage races, Barbero is a little known but very talented bike rider. He won the final sprint in front of 1998 winner Davide Rebellin and in-form Francesco Casagrande. It was Casagrande who was the major aggressor in the race when he attacked after 122 kms. Only 6 other riders could respond to his attack (including Barbero and Rebellin). Over the next 70 odd kms, Casagrande was very forceful and one-by-one the others were dropped with the exception of Barbero and Rebellin. Casagrande launched the final sprint some 500 metres from the line but that allowed the other two to sit his wheel and come around in the closing metres. Borgomanero to Varese, 200 kms:1.
