Brief:

Polti's Davide Rebellin won the 78th edition of the Tre Valli Varesine after attacking twice at strategic points of the race. He had been in a breakaway of 5 riders and with 3 kms to go he put the hammer down and only Giuseppe Di Grande (Mapei-Bricobi) and Max Sciandri (La Francaise des Jeux) could respond. They never caught him however and with less than a km left to ride he attacked again and held the gap until the finish line.

He told the press afterwards that: "I left at the right moment and when I saw them coming back at me, I just gave everything I had. Now I need to concentrate on preparing for the end of the season and the world championships."

The Tre Valli Varesine is part of a 3 race series held in late August in the region north of Milan. They were traditionally preparation for the Worlds which used to be at the end of August. The next race is on Thursday - the 52nd Coppa Agostoni which uses the Monza car racing circuit, and then the 80th Coppa Bernocchi which is raced around the corner at Legnano.

The only other news was that top Cofidis rider Francesco Casagrande was withdrawn from the race by his team after the failure of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) to quickly resolve the scandal surrounding his positive drugs test. He has been found positive to high levels of testosterone after tests following the Tour of Romandie and he is now to appear before CONI next Tuesday.

But if you think there will be a decision quickly - forget it. The initial committee has already said it will pass the matter to another commission of CONI and then onto the Italian Cycling Federation, who has the final decision responsibility. Cofidis, obviously getting a lot of bad press on the continued participation of Casagrande, have said he is no longer riding for them until the matter is finalised. If he is suspended he will be sacked.

Casagrande told the press after Cofidis had dropped him from the race that: "The team have asked me not to compete in any race until the federation have taken a decision -- that means waiting until the middle of September. And not riding until September means goodbye to the rest of the season. It would do me enormous damage. I will see my lawyers about whether to take any action against the team. This decision is also grounds for cancelling our contract since the team are violating my right to work. I consider myself free to sign for other teams -- I don't want to stay with Cofidis."
