Report:

Italian Leonardo Piepoli (Banesto) won the 160.6 kms Subida a Urkiola, contested between Durango and Sanctuaure d'Urkiola (finishing at the summit of a Cat 1 climb) in solo fashion in front of two Spaniards - Francisco Tomas (Vitalicio Seguros) and Banesto teammate José Maria Jiménez. After his victory on August 5 in the Tour of Castille y Léon, the Italian has confirmed that he is back in form after a fractured collar bone sustained during the Giro d'Italia in May.

As is usual, the race was decided in the last 6 kms on the climb of the Cat Col d'Urkiola which has an average gradient of around 10 per cent. Piepoli attacked with 3 kms left before the summit and was chased by 4 riders who were unable to reel him in.
