Brief:The Italian rider Simone Borgherisi (Mercatone Uno) won the Subida a Urkiola over 160 kms with the finish being on the summit of the Sanctuary of Urkiola, at a height of 770 metres. Borgherisi, 30 years, scored his second win of his career with a 14 seconds margin on the Belgian rider Axel Merckx with a further 11 seconds back to third placed Angel Luis Casero.Borherisi, a teammate of Marco Pantani, earlier won a stage in the Tour of Aragon, and he attacked in the last kilometre to drop his co-breakaway riders. Both Merckx and Casero, were unable to counter the attack up the spectacular hillside to the sanctuary. While not particularly long, the climb averaged 9.3 per cent with some points reaching 14%. Merckx is still searching for his first major victory and still has to be content with the runners-up tag, having also came 2nd the day before in the Clasica San Sebastian. Race distance - 160 kms:1.
