PreviewThe 83rd Ronde van Vlaanderen see the best riders come together. The most beautiful Flemish race always attracts the strongest field. The negative image that cycling has seen once again this week with the drugs bust will not deter the enthusiasm that is always associated with the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The supporters will come out on Easter Sunday and will line the course between Brugge and Meerbeke in their thousands.There is now a huge focus on cycling in Europe because of the drugs revelations since the 1998 Tour de France. The police are now involved in the sport. The popular press are sniffing around for more controversy. Last Thursday the got it. At De Panne the scandals resurfaced so publicly. And the Belgian fans witnessed their living legend - Johan Museeuw - being taken away by police from the Mapei bus and transported to the barracks in Kortrijk. Today there will be tens of thousands of his fans out. And after hearing that the police bungled the matter and that they had nothing at all on the riders the fans will give the man who 12 months ago dominated this race the biggest reception of his career. It will be a very exciting time for Johan Museeuw. Both Museeuw and Bartoli will be helping each other today. But Museeuw will be the key figure in the race. This is his first classic since he fell in last year's Paris-Roubaix where he will be among the favourites again. Some comeback. In Milan-San Remo, just two weeks ago, he was very watchful. The Spring classic was really just a team ride for the rider from West Flanders. But today - the Ronde - that is always Museeuw's highlight of the year. This is the race for him. He has won it three times. Without a miscalculation in the sprint with Bugno and without some luck at some crucial moments he could have won it 6 times. It is difficult to say if he can make it 4 victories. All of Flanders is hoping but half are dubious. He already has done well in the Dwars door België and the Brabantse Pijl but they are not the Ronde. His chances are less clear than they will be in the North of France next weekend. But with Museeuw you never know. Business in business and on Sunday he will get the biggest ovation along the way. From Brugge to Meerbeke the fans will be willing him to win. Museeuw is not the only key figure in the 83rd Ronde van Vlaanderen. The more likely winner will be his teammate Michele Bartoli - the Flemish Italian! Museeuw and Bartoli are going to have to make sure that the one with the best chances at the end are given support by the other. Other contenders include Belgian Peter van Petegem who is now TVM's top rider in the classics. Peter won the E3 Harelbeke and also was successful in the shortened De Panne. Franck Vandenbroucke is also in form. He was of all the riders the fastest on the hills in the E3 and in the second stage of De Panne. Last year the Ronde was hell for Vandenbroucke and now he can atone for that. The likely summer weather is meanwhile not to his disadvantage. Quite the opposite. The rider who will not benefit from the good weather will be Andreï Tchmil. He seems to love the chilly conditions. But he is in top condition and he has that knack of turning something into a victory. Belgian Andrei Tchmil did not expect to win the first classic of the season - Milan-San Remo. He is now definitely looking to win the Ronde van Vlaanderen. But he has to face the claims of three other Belgians including the rider that the Belgian Press are calling the "the medical miracle man" - Johan Museeuw 36-year old Tchmil told the local press that: "These races (RVV and Paris-Roubaix) are part of the sacred history of cycling and I want my name in the history books. I know this race inside out, the course, the places where everything is decided." Peter van Petegem also knows the race inside out. He told the local press that: "I never felt as strong as this." His team manager Hendrik Redant interrupted: "It's been known that Peter Van Petegem has made the Ronde van Vlaanderen almost his main goal in life. That he came to the fore just a few days before this classic race proves his incredible self-confidence." Frank Vandenbroucke told the press after losing De Panne to van Petegem that: "Van Petegem proved that he is in the best form of his life. For Sunday it means that he will have to carry the weight of the Ronde van Vlaanderen on his shoulders." But Museeuw is also there too. His wife Veronique told the local press on Friday that: "One day Johan was a super athlete, the next day he was an ageing poor soul who had to be helped off the couch by three people." Van Petegem also thinks the police action this week where Museeuw was forced to undergo questioning at the Kortrijk barracks will spur Museeuw on. He had first hand experience as a TVM rider during the Tour de France questioning. He said: "I know what it is, waiting for questioning. But don't write off Johan Museeuw. Someone who can come back from that far is mentally unbreakable." But Patrick Lefevere, the Mapei team boss said the effects of the police action are likely to be damaging. He said: "I'm worried for the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The riders stayed off the saddle the whole day. They were taken away without being able to inform their relatives and were questioned individually. It's not ideal." That will affect both Museeuw and the World Cup winner of 1998 Michele Bartoli.
