Reporters for the Tour

The reports and results from the Sun Tour are coming from my friends Jenny Kisler and Brian Farrell. I am getting no assistance at all from the official organisers who seem unwilling to provide details despite requests. Thanks greatly to Jenny and Brian.

Stage 9, Shepparton Circuit Race, 80 kms:

The bunch stayed mainly together with only a few minor attacks going but being brought back. Jaroslav Bilek picked up many of the intermediate sprints and with them enough bonus seconds to move into second on GC. An attack containing John Lieswyn, David Lee and a few others went with 3 laps of the 2.5km circuit remaining. However they were brought back with about 1km to go. Andy De Smet again won a bunch sprint, this time beating Baden Burke.

Stage 11, Myrtleford to Mount Hotham

Everyone reached the climb together and then the climbers started to leave
people behind. Moninger attacked and McGrory went with him. These two left
the bunch behind and not far from the finish Moninger was able to drop
McGrory. McGrory came back but was dropped again.

The Australians really needed to have made up time on some of the other riders to be in with a chance to win overall. A minute silence at the start of the race was observed following the death of a cyclist in Europe (a teammate for a couple of riders in the race).

Stage 15, Melbourne, Criterium 42.5 kms:

Alessandro Pozzi began the final stage with a 1.04 lead on Tristan Priem, meaning that Priem needed to get into a breakaway or to win nearly all of the sprint bonuses available. An early attack by Josh Collingwood meant he won the first 2 sprints before the field brought him back. Then an attack by Ronniy Lauke went. He had a lead of about 8 seconds before anyone began to chase. Eric Wohlberg and Koen Beekman were able to cross the gap and this group of three worked well increasing their lead to 15 sec. While all this occurring Josh Collingwood was catching his breath right on the back of the main field. One of the Mitre 10 riders tried to cross the gap and spent quite a few laps in the gap between this group and the field. When the field brought him back, Josh Collingwood attacked again and rode easily across the gap to the breakaways, who were continuing to hold their lead and maybe even increase it a little. These four held a lead of about 18 sec on the field coming up to about 8 laps to go, then Allan Iacuone and Haydn Bradbury started to work on the front, hoping to bring things back together for David McKenzie. Allan Iacuone did a lot of the work and brought the gap back to a couple of seconds before being swamped by all the other teams trying to get into the action. The breakaways were swallowed up with a couple of laps remaining and the bunch sprint was won by Graeme Miller (who wasn't really too impressed that the commentators kept pointing out that he was the oldest rider in the race at 37).

Teammate Robert Tighello translated so that Alessandro Pozzi was able to answer the usual questions about will you be back next year? etc on the winners podium, as Pozzi speaks little English. The only other comment worth noting was one about he wanted to thank his teammates who did well considering they lost one member early after "Patey" pulled out and we couldn't help but wonder if that was an actual translation....Apart from that Pozzi simply said it was the biggest tour he had won and would see what the next season held before deciding whether to return next year.
