Stage Details and Riders
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 Stage 5 Stage 6 Stage 7 Stage 8 Stage 9-14 Reporters for the TourThe reports and results from the Sun Tour are coming from my friends Jenny Kisler and Brian Farrell. I am getting no assistance at all from the official organisers who seem unwilling to provide details despite requests. Thanks greatly to Jenny and Brian.Stage 1, Melbourne Criterium, 31.5 kms:Stage 1 of the Vic Health Herald Sun Tour started well with the roads drying out after some heavy showers. After the first lap there was a strong break away from Olin Backe (Australia Post) and Richard Faltus (Warrnambool), which opened up a gap of over 100 meters in the second lap.Almost at the same time, Stephen Pate went out the back at a rapid pace and was lapped at least five times during the race. Backe and Faltus continued with their effort for nearly twenty laps taking in sprint bonus points on the way. The tight corners made it difficult for anyone to close the gap. David McKenzie eventually closed down the pair after the 20th lap and then made an attempt to go himself. This was not to be as he was soon back in the pack. Eric Wohlburg then attacked taking with him a small bunch which stayed away until one lap to go. The whole field was complete again going into the final lap. With a down hill sprint, Andy De Smeet (SunSmart) made his attack as they came out of the last corner opening up a huge gap to take the first stage and the leaders Jersey. Second was Brent McCaig (Transhepp) and third was Graeme Miller (Mitre 10). The most aggressive rider was awarded to Richard Faltus with the points Jersey going to Olin Backe with 18 points in all. Tomorrow is the first road stage from Kilmore to Eaglehawk over 161 kms through the central gold fields of Victoria.

Stage 2, Kilmore to Eaglehawk, 161.1 kms:Olin Bakke is in yellow tonight after another show of strengh on the ride to Eaglehawk. He was away with Swiss rider Simon Steiner for over 50 kms of the stage and he also has collected the leader's jersey in addition to the jersey's for sprints, points, mountains and the most aggressive rider award. The breakaway looked at times as though it would dominate the overall for the days to come. They built up a lead of 12 minutes and were only caught with 20 kms to go.Another attack went straight away this time motivated by David McKenzie and the Swiss rider Josef Christen. They gained a small gap (0.30) before they to were run down by a fast finishing peloton. The end was set up for a mass sprint which the Belgian Bart Heirwigh won from Scott McGrory. 28-year old Bakke who finished 58th in the sprint finish picked up 34 seconds in bonifications to lead Heirwegh by 0.19 overall. He told Roger Vaughan, AAP's cycling reporter that: "This is going way better than I expected. I came here wanting to win the most aggressive rider's jersey and it's going really well so far. I'm really pumped just to come out to Australia and race. This would be the highlight of my career." This was a good return to the Sun Tour for Bakke. Last year he came into the race sick and recovering from a broken ankle. His role however this year is to support the top Australia Post rider Eric Wohlberg. Now the Canadians have a problems of tactics to work out. Whether to support Bakke or Wohlberg.

Stage 4, Sunbury, 142.9 kmskms:Just a note on Stage 4 - A people's challenge ride was held in the morning to let the general public have a go at one of the stages. There were about 560 people in this and I think all of them would agree that although lots of fun this was not an easy stage!! I rode myself (Jenny writing!) - and really enjoyed that long climb out of Blackwood (Cat 2)!!! Most of the other climbs were long and not particularly steep, with the last tough one coming at 110km. So congrats to all those who had a go, especially the guy who sprinted for the line to come in just in front of the race, and received a big cheer from the crowd!!69 of the 70 riders started the stage. Eddie Salas went on an early lone breakaway. He was hoping someone else would go with him when he went with 10km gone and 130km remaining. Later two other riders were able to cross the gap to him and these three stayed away for the rest of the race despite lots of effort from the bunch. It came down to a three way sprint for the line with Salas taking a much deserved win after doing a lot of the work. The main field followed in 200m behind.

A small break containing Haydn Bradbury went away early. The main field were involved in a big crash involving 20 or so riders. Those injured included Klaus Diewald (concussion and possible broken collarbone), Olin Bakke and Jason Phillips (suspected broken rib). Olin Bakke's bike was badly damaged and the team car nearby did not have a replacement bike on it, so after a lot of stuffing around they got him back into the race and his team brought him back to the field. The main field actually slowed down to wait for those who had crashed so he made it back safely. Haydn Bradbury was making the most of the break and at one stage had a lead of over 4min 30sec on the bunch which put him in yellow on the road. In the end the break didn't succeed and Bradbury's teammate David McKenzie won the stage in a bunch sprint.

Favourite and previous winner, Scott Moninger lost time after a puncture and was unable to get back to the front group and lost 14 minutes by the finish. Olin Bakke, the yellow jersey wearer coming into the stage lost over 3 minutes. A two man breakaway at the end of the stage resulted in a win for Tristan Priem.
