The whole group (except Van Heeswijk) cooperated well and had the maximum lead of 6 minutes. Van Heeswijk who was riding at the back of the escape group all the time then had an easy job to outsprint the others. As the escape group contained some dangerous men for the overall (including past winners Nardello and Bonca) this "easy" stage may cost Luttenberger the overall win although the hardest stages are still to come.

In the main pack Beat Zberg and some other riders managed to escape on that climb and Bonca and Luttenberger were left in the second group. On the last part, the first group with 3 riders managed to stay away and tour leader Bonca was almost 6 minutes back. The whole Bosch-Mattighofen team (Gugganig, Dollinger, Grabner, Hempel, Kern, and Trkal) dropped out of the race after the coming down with salmonella poisoning.
