We are averaging 129588 per day on my server now!

16.34: Around 20 riders to the finish as Zabel sprints to take the race.

16.34: Ten riders are coming to Elli: Zabel, Colombo. Next attack: Rolf Jaermann.

16.32: Elli still in front, but 5 riders are coming. Still 50 meters in front though.

16.31: Group behind Elli is growing to around 40 riders.

16.31: 16.31 Elli leads by 80 meters, around 5 seconds.

16.30: Descent of Poggio. Elli is leader.

16.29: Elli (34 years) attacks and is first at the top of Poggio. First group not more than 15 riders now.

16.28: Attack by Jalabert! But doesn't take any distance out of the peloton.

16.27: In front of peloton: Tchmil, Colombo, Jalabert, Ballerini, Boogerd, Dufaux, Hamburger, Elli.

16.25: No Christmas-card from Virenque to Brasi. The peloton has now caught the two leaders. In the front is Andrei Tchmil and Rolf Jaermann. There are still 50-70 riders in contention.

16.23: Start of Il Poggio. Virenque is still leading.

16.22: It seems Virenque is screaming 'mama mia' because Brasi is not working at all. They still have 14 seconds to the main chase group.

16.20: Lotto riders now lead the peloton. Virenque is very angry with Brasi for forcing him to lead in their mini attack.

16.19: 18 seconds for the two leaders, but Brasi seems to have orders not to lead?

16.17: 250 metres now for Virenque and Brasi (who is using an earphone).

16.15: Attack by Rossano Brasi, followed by Richard Virenque. They have 150 metres.

16.14: After descent Zabel and Bartoli are in front of the peloton. If Bartoli wins he will get a red Ferrari.

We are averaging 102689 successful requests per day at present on my server.

16.11: Casino is leading the peloton.

16.09: Still 22 km to go. The peloton has just gone over the top of the 240 metre Cipressa and are starting the descent. Elli and Hamburger are in front of the peloton.

16.07: The peloton is now one big line on the Cipressa.

16.04: Attack by Farazijn, Colage, Jaermann and Massi. Peloton at 30 meters. Cipollini in group 3!

16.02: Attack by Michael Boogerd (other names in first peloton: Julich, Hamburger, Elli).

16.01: 'Peloton compatto' - there are still between 50-70 riders on the climb of the Cipressa.

15.59: Claudio Chiappucci attacks at the start of the Cipressa. Lombardi did his job up to the Cipressa and can stop working.

15.59: The main peloton (with riders such as Cipollini, Boogerd, Heppner, Baldinger, Museeuw, Zabel, Fondriest, and Van Bon) are 40 seconds in front of a second group (with Pantani).

15.55: the Telekom train is in front of the peloton.

15.54: 'Peloton compatto' after action by Asics riders working on the front of the peloton.

15.52: It seems that the crash was more serious that first thought. The helicopter view shows that the peloton has only 80 riders left after spill. Alessandro Petacchi still in front of the peloton.

15.51: Attack by Petacchi. He gets 100 metres.

15.49: The peloton is now descending the Capo Berta and into Imperia. Still 35 km to go.

15.47: Pantani and Chiappucci are noticable in the front of the peloton.

15.44: The peloton is starting up the climb of Capo Berta. There are some minor attacks by Guido Trenti, and Lotto's Peter Farazijn.

15.42: There is a fall in the peloton (some of the riders involve include Outschakov, Axel Merckx, Roberto Sierra)

15.40: Still 46.5 km to go. 'Peloton compatto'. Hundertmarck works hard in front of peloton, Lombardi and Frattini are also working to control the race for Telekom.

15.35: Attacks by Marco Serpellinni and Riccardo Forconi but nothing serious.

15.30: Telekom-riders in front of peloton. Nice sunny weather. Still 50 km to go.

15.28: 'Peloton compatto', no leaders anymore.

15.26: Still 35 seconds between leaders and peloton.

15.23: The TV coverage in Europe has just started. The viewers will find a nearly complete peloton with the two early breakaway leaders having only 1.20 on it.

15.21: Peloton on 1.50 minutes

15.18: Francisco Jose Garcia Kiko and Marco Antonio die Renzo still have 3.25 minutes on the peloton.

Abandon: Rolf Sorenson with a stomach complaint.

15.05: Two leaders still 5.50 in front of peloton.

14.55: Still 70 km to go. Peloton is coming at 7.20.

14.40: The peloton awakes. The two leaders still have 9.25 minutes. Everybody expects that Francisco Jose Garcia Kiko and Marco Antonio di Renzo will not repeat the feats of French rider Marc Gomez, who left the peloton at the beginning of the race in 1982 and won in a massive solo effort.

14.30: 199 riders started 9.30 in Milano After 8 km two riders attacked from the peloton: Francisco Jose Garcia Kiko (ONCE) and Marco Antonio di Renzo (Cantina Tollo)

They quickly worked on a 24 (TWENTY FOUR!!) minute lead. After 120 km they arrived on the Turchino. At the top they still have 14 minutes.

Another 170 km to go.

Pre Race - Henk just emailed and wrote that "Just as my first real race comes up I am shaking and shivering in my bed with a 40 degree fever. I feel like death warmed up so I am out of Milan San Remo. It is bronchitis and so I will be out for 10 days until I can breathe again.

Pre Race: - First update. Angel Edo (Kelme) wasn't allowed to start in Milan-San Remo this morning at 9.20 am. 20 riders were subjected to blood test and Edo was found to have a hemotacrit level above 50% which the UCI has ruled is too high. He is now unable to race for 2 weeks.

Welcome: - Greeting from Hans and Bill. This is the first of several live coverages that we plan to run this classics season. I am working on a full real audio coverage by the Worlds but it is some way off yet. Enjoy the coverage. The page will automatically refresh at intervals which will become shorter as the race unfolds.

All times are local European.
