Erik Zabel triumphs

27-year old German Erik Zabel sprinted to victory in the Milan-San Remo classic to take the race for the second year in a row. He is the first rider to win the Primavera in successive years since 1989 when Laurent Fignon achieved the same feat. This was his 6th win for the season after a slow start. He never looked threatened in the sprint from the two French riders Emmanuel Magnien and Frederic Moncassin who led the final charge if a group of 18 riders. He is also the leader of the World Cup after Round 1.

Zabel is quoted by Reuters as saying: "Not until the finishing straight did I consider that there was a chance to win again. Since October I have covered 16,000 kilometres in training to prepare for this day."

The 89th Milan-San Remo was raced in sunshine and reasonable weather. From the beginning, Italian Marco Antonio Di Renzo and the Spaniard Francisco Garcia, escaped (at the 9km mark). They had a lead of 25 minutes at km 118 but were caught at the 140 km mark.

Zabel's Telekom team controlled the race until the Cipressa, some 25 kms from the line. It also controlled the climb of Il Poggio where Laurent Jalabert made an attempt to escape without success.

The action began on the Poggio as is usual with Alberto Elli escaping over top, 6 kms out from the line. He gained a lead of 50 metres but the top group caught him after the descent as they rode through the flat streets of San Remo.

Zabel launched the sprint and won it easily.

Magnien and Moncassin - not dishonoured

Two French riders took places of honour on the podium, and they were not Jalabert or Virenque, but two men of the second ranks, although they are well respected among the peloton.

Emmanuel Magnien has earned his second ranking - far away from the untouchable Zabel but always close to the action. He talked about his role in the race and that of Moncassin. "We are happy with the places. To come second behind Zabel is not a dishonour. Perhaps in the sprint I lacked a little confidence in my ability, but I used to much energy going up Il Poggio. I am still looking for the first victory to break the ice." said the La Francaise des Jeux rider.

Frederic Moncassin, seems accustomed to taking important placings in big races without winning

Virenque explodes in anger

France's Richard Virenque exploded in anger after Milan-San Remo and said that: " Brasi has not collaborated" The action between the Cipressa and the Il Poggio where Rossano Brasi and Richard Virenque were leading has provoked some bitter arguments. Those who observed it on TV it seemed clear that the native of Bergamo received the orders from his managers not to help Virenque - via his earpiece. And the gestures of the Virenque who was livid confirm this interpretation. Virenque said afterwards that: "In the beginning Brasi helped make the break. Then the sport director communicated with him through the portable radio and he must have received the order not to pull anymore. When I realised that he had received orders not to help I realised that our attempt to break away was over."

Spectator injured

A spectator was seriously hurt from a tragic motor accident while watching Milan-San Remo. 66-year old Julia Rasera was injured after being hit by a car that was refused to stop and which continued onto the the end in the centre of Imperia.

The women was taken to the hospital and had her leg amputated. In the evening it was stated that the private car had been part of the race convoy.
