Brief
The "Vlaamse Ardennen: weren't the big problem. After the Eikenberg a group
of 11 (including Van Petegem, Tchmil and Museeuw) escaped from
the peloton. Once the peloton got through the hills, the lead group contained
around 50 riders. In the finale there was an attempt by Dutchman Servais
Knaven and others to break away but the Mapei-clan (with 5 riders in the
first group) brought the group back. Johan Museeuw brought Tom Steels to the
finish line for the sprint.
