Preview
In form Belgian Frank Vandenbroucke is now the favourite to win the
4th World Cup event - Luik-Bastenaken-Luik (Liege-Bastogne-Liege). His
favourtism has firmed since the injury to his compatriot and teammate
Johan Museeuw during last Sunday's Paris-Roubaix. Vandenbroucke
has had great early season form and came back from some persistent
knee problems with a strong showing in the Waalse Pijl last
Wednesday. He came in second to Bo Hamburger and rode the last climb
of the Muur de Hoy very quickly indeed.
He is reported as saying: "With this physical condition I can win
Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The way I left everyone behind on that climb
gives me an enormous amount of confidence for Sunday."
His team manager Patrick Lefevere agrees after seeing the parade
during Waalse Pijl: "We saw today that nobody
is super, not Jalabert, not Bartoli, nobody. And taking into account
Frank's sore throat, he can only improve by Sunday.
His Mapei-Bricobi team is also dominating the season to date with
2 of the 3 World Cup events going to them - Johan Museeuw
at RVV and Franco Ballerini at Paris-Roubaix.
Erik Zabel started the season with a flash but is not considered
a threat on Sunday. The parcours is too tough for Erik who is also
not in great form at present.
1997 doyenne winner Michele Bartoli is sick after a strong Waalse
Pijl. The animator of last year and world number one Laurent
Jalabert (2nd behind Bartoli) was not strong in Waalse Pijl
but is still considered to be a threat.
