Way back when...
It has been nearly four decades since an omnium was contested at the world track cycling championships. It’s understood that Patrick Sercu (right), current impresario of many Six Day events, lobbied the UCI to re-introduce the event. Sercu is still the most successful Six Day racer ever, and also a more-than-competent road sprinter. He is shown here in Vincennes, France, with Belgian champion Eddy Merckx (L) and Raymond Poulidor (C) on July 21, 1974, at the velodrome of Vincennes, after Merckx won the Tour de France for the fifth time. Sercu won the points jersey.

He's the man?
Ryan Bayley salutes Ben Kersten after the latter won the Australian keirin title earlier this year. Kersten is one rider tipped as likely to succeed at the 'omnium', a combination event comprising five different track events that is to be introduced at the 2007 track cycling world championships.

Worthwhile pursuit?
One of the events in the omnium will be a 3km individual pursuit, not considered one of the sprinters' favourites.

The final event in the omnium will be a 1 km time trial, a specialist event for sprinters like Scotland's reigning king of the kilo, Chris Hoy.

Pure sprinters
It's thought that the 'omnium' may not suit pure sprinters, unless they develop more endurance.
