Bruno Risi smiles
as he slings in partner Kurt Betschart. Lying in third place overall, the Swiss pair were strong contenders for overall victory. Minutes later, Risi was brought down in a crash and injured his knee, putting him out of the race.
-
Pain:
Injured, Bruno Risi is helped back to his cabin. Note the strapping on his fingers.Risi also injured his left knee.
-
Concern…
Race organiser Patrick Sercu checks up on how Risi is doing. A former six-day rider himself, Sercu's care for the riders is obvious in this photo.
-
The show must go on.
British pro Rob Hayles wins a race on the final day of the Ghent Six
-
Professionalism.
Rob Hayles and Mark Cavendish take time to pose with their race sponsor, a cheese producer.
-
New team:
Dimitri de Fauw was put out of the race by the same crash that injured Risi, so De Fauw’s partner Andreas Beikirch paired up with Kurt Betschart for the final Madison – and they made a good, aggressive team, trying hard to steal the overall victory with a lap gain
-
Dutch style...
Danny Stam and Rob Slippens were classy as ever, taking second overall this year.
-
Full-on!
Heading into the final five sprints of the last Madison, Slippens and Stam held a slender overall lead. Here Iljo Keisse comes round Rob Slippens to move Gilmore / Keisse into the overall lead.
-
Full gas!
Matt Gilmore gives it “full gas” in the penultimate sprint, to the delight of the Belgian crowd.
-
Hard change
- Matt Gilmore gives Iljo Keisse a full-speed handsling during the final moments of the Ghent Six.
-
One lap to go
- Rob Slippens leads out Iljo Keisse, but the young Belgian came round Slippens to cross the line first, sealing the victory for Gilmore / Keisse

If you thought the sun never shone in England
here is proof it does as the riders in the junior race head towards clear blue skies - and its the middle of winter - or at least feels like it!
-
Lap 1 of the women's race
and Clare Gross leads from Gabby Day and Sue Thomas, with the rest of the field trailing.
-
Jody Crawforth attacks Belgian visitor David Willemsens
in the elite men's race.
-
David Willemsens falls for the second time
in the elite men's race and loses more time to the leaders.
-
With the sun starting to set
(yes, it was out all day), Dave Collins takes flight and leaves Steven Roach (113) to hold on to 3rd place.
-
Early on in the elite men's race
and Ian Bibby leads Jody Crawforth with the Belgian rider David Willemsens a few lengths adrift.
-
Giving as good as he gets
- David Willemsens from Belgium attacks Jody Crawforth during the Elite mens race.
-
Playing follow the leader in the elite men's race
as local rider Steven Roach leads Jody Crawforth through one of the many switch backs on the course.
-
Local rider Steven Roach forces the pace
on the down hill and at the bottom there were only three of the original four riders left after David Willemsens crashed.
-
Dave Collins had a slow start
but soon fought his way all to the front to second again behind Crawforth.
-
First came the normal victory salute
from Jody Crawforth ...
-
...and then the first victory salute of this kind
we have seen this year! Way to go Jody!
-
Stephen Adams
trying to break the yellow jersey Tom Last in the junior race.
-
Amy Hunt was riding 'cross
less than 12 hours after racing the track in Manchester, finshing 2nd after a fine performance.
-
Sue Thomas on her way to yet another fine victory
and another confidence building performances after a season or two of injuries.
-
Michelle Bergstrand fell and appeared to have hurt her shoulder
but got up and bravely finished the race.
-
The three riders who made the junior race
were all winners of a round in the National Trophy so far; Stephen Adams, Tom Last and eventual winner at Mallory Park David Fletcher.
-
The national champion's jersey was seen for the first time
in the series as Louise Robinson showed good form to finish 3rd.
-
Big fields were the order of the day
in the bright sunshine at Mallory Park.
-
A far bigger than usual group formed
at the front of the veterans over 40 race in the early stages, with local Phil Roach going on to win.
-
In the veterans over 40 race
Andrew Shaw forces the pace with Phil Roach clinging on whilst Andy Barnard has to give best and starts to fall back
-
Annabel Simpson has dominated the girls category
in the youth races for the National Trophy series.
-
In the under 14 girls, Penny Rowson leads Samantha Bryant
with Bryant going on to win that category at Mallory Park.
-
Steven Proud comes out of the sun
to cross the finish line to complete another lap in the youth race.
-
Yet another win for Alex Paton
in the youth race as he extended his lead in the series.
-
The women's podium
(l-r): Amy Thompson (1st junior), Louise Robinson (3rd and 1st veteran), Sue Thomas (1st and new leader of the series) and Amy Hunt (2nd).
-
Tom Last (Matlock CC) and Oliver Webster (Triangle RT)
are first out of the blocks as they race up the club to the start/finish area and the course proper.
-
It took a little coaxing
but we got them to smile in the end even though yellow jersey Mick Bell probably didn't feel too happy after 'one of those days'. Phil Roach - he of the biggest smile in the host club's Rugby Velo jersey - is certainly pleased though and is now Bell's closest challenger in the series. On the right is Andrew Shaw (2nd) and on the left is Duncan Walmsley (3rd).
-
Over 50's veterans race
(l-r): Joseph Rowe (3rd), Roy Hunt (1st) and Geoff Bores (2nd).

The top six day stars
came to Manchester with Robert Slippens & Danny Stam leading the pack through on the presentation laps from Matt Gilmore & Iljo Keisse and World Madison champions Rob Hayles & Mark Cavendish.
-
Craig MacLean peels off
after lap 1 for Jason Queally to lead the British trio to a fine victory over the Germans. As Jan Jan Van Eijden said later in his best English/German accent.. 'they kicked our asses'.
-
Jan Van Eijden leads the Germans
through in an event he admitted afterwards he isn't really suited to anymore as man 1 but the Germans still made the British work for their victory.
-
Winners again of the Raleigh Future Stars competition
were Lucy Richards and Peter Kennaugh.
-
Chris Hoy, winner of the Invitation Keirin
where the Germans set up a lead out train for Rene Wolff but the Brits Hoy and Ross Edgar were the ones who fought out the victory at the end of the lap.
-
Nicole Cooke was in dominant form
in the Womens Omnium winning at will almost.
-
Matt Gilmore & Iljo Keisse came away
from Manchester with victory in the Flying kilometre.
-
Craig MacLean was really sharp
in the sprint, coming around World Champion Rene Wolff on the final bend to win by the whisker.
-
Matthew Crampton had no equal
in the Keirin where he won comfortably.
-
One of the finest victories
of the night went to Junior World Pursuit champion Andrew Tennannt in the Points race.
-
First victory of the night
went to Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins and Chris Newton in the Madison Elimination race.
-
It was a luxury hamper
awaiting the VIPs and guests in the track centre as the racing went on around them.
-
Winners of an awesome Madison
- and how happy is Rob Hayles with that - were World Champions Mark Cavendish and Rob Hayles.

-
World Madison Champions Rob Hayles and Mark Cavendish
at work in the Madison which they won.
-
Grenoble Six day winners Matt Gilmore & Iljo Keisse
were as impressive as ever in Manchester.
-
Lots of touchy feely stuff
of the very high speed phyiscal kind in the Invitiation Keirin with Jan Van Eijden trying to muscle in on Chris Hoy's space. Jan Van Eijden is back in Manchester, scene of both his World title wins in the Kilo and Sprint, in three weeks for the Keirin at the World Cup.
-
The Germans get their train going
at the bell in the Keirin but couldn't hold off Chris Hoy, Olympic champion in the Kilometre.
-
World Sprint champion Rene Wolff.
-
Jan Van Eijden and Carsten Bergemann
of Germany, were both very welcome visitors in Manchester.
-
Matthew Crampton has to go the long way
round at the bell in the Keirin but had too much speed for the rest and won comfortably.
-
No sprint would be complete without a standstill
-- here Rene Wolff and Craig MacLean oblige in the final.
-
Craig MacLean gives it full gas
and comes around Rene Wolff in the final of the Sprint.
-
Nicole Cooke sprints away
from the rest in one of her events in the Omnium.
