Drenched in warm sunshine and humid conditions, Gersib rode what he described as a "patient race" covering the 18-mile track in 1:37:38. In fact, it was a much different and challenging course than previous years. Plagued by wet conditions and damaging horse tracks in recent weeks, course conditions were less than desirable in the days leading up to the race. However, race promoters Mike Resetar, Greg Shimonek and members of the Benson Bike Club were able to cut, groom and drag the trails into excellent shape by race day. The dusty and loose route suited the aggressive riding of Gersib, who used the white-knuckle downhill sections to make-up time and exact revenge for a second place finish to Kent McNeill (OBCR) in 2001. "Today was about respecting the heat and not going above the red line for too long," explained Gersib. "I felt like I executed my race plan well." Holding back in the start, Gersib followed a different tactical plan for the first 9-mile lap. The different approach paid off. As Gersib explained, "I did not want to make the same mistake that I made at Platte. I did not go out as hard and let the race come back to me before I attacked. From there I just needed to hold on."
