The 2002 Lincoln Plating "Spring Classics" moved into its second weekend with the first of three mountain bike competitions. Extremely strong winds and a dry race circuit made for some fast, albeit rough racing. "The wind was definitely a factor today," Schalke commented. "It was rough in some of the more open areas of the course, but it helped on the climbs." The victory was a good one for Schlake who lined-up with some of the area's best riders including one special guest, professional rider Chris Sheppard of Haro-Lee Dungarees. Travelling through Nebraska on his way to a training camp in North Carolina, Sheppard decided to try his hand at the Nebraska race scene. "This is a great set-up for a local race," said Sheppard, who lives in Kamloops, British Columbia. "The food, music, everything is great!" Unfortunately for Sheppard, two mechanicals and a blown rear-shock forced him to abandon the race with a 1.5 laps to go. How about that Nebraska racing! The 2002 Lincoln Plating "Spring Classics" XC MTB Series continues next Saturday, April 13th at Branched Oak Lake.
