MTB index page for all MTB content World Cup XC #6, DH & 4X #5 - BBrazil, July 2-3, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Race Next Race Race 4 - Elite men downhillMinaar and Moseley take Brazil World Cup downhillBy Steve Medcroft Brazilian Markolf Berchtold (Maxxis-MSC) came to the first ever South American MTB World Cup with aspirations of performing well in front of a home crowd and didn't disappoint. Coming second to Greg Minaar (Team G-Cross Honda) by less than a second in a nail biting finish, Bechtold almost pulled off the dream upset. But under sunny skies on a dusty clay course that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean, included rider-high boulder drop-offs and an extended wooden launch, it was Minaar on the top step of the podium. Again; the win in Brazil is Minaar's fifth podium in 2005 (two second's a fourth and now two wins) and plants him firmly on top of UCI World Cup series standings. As for tomorrow's World Cup cross-country, American Adam Craig says that racers are in for a tough, hot day. "It was in the low eighties today but super humid. There's an ocean breeze but it doesn't feel any cooler than the regular air and since all the climbing is away from the ocean, you climb in stagnant, hot and humid air" Held on a 5.5 kilometer loop, "there's some heinous climbing," Craig says. "Most of the climbs are up existing doubletrack." And there aren't any switchbacks - the fire and asphalt roads run from the bottom to the top of the region's granite bluffs in the most direct manner possible; a straight line. Which means strong climbers like Craig will have two or three lanes to work in on the uphill sections while much of the field will be walking bikes. As for his prediction of low turnout from North American and European racers, Craig says "I am the only North American I've seen. There are some European guys but from like fourteenth down on the start list, it's all South American guys."
