Sunday, May 19, Battle Royale MTB opener at Platte River State Park was no exception as Schlake (Team Kaos) covered the 22.5 mile course in 1.39.50, beating second place finisher Stephen Jarrett (OBCR) by 3.06. After a fast start that featured an impressive dust cloud courteousy of a three-rider pile-up, the field powered the opening 1/4 mile climb led by Team Kaos rider Matt Gersib. Accented by various quad-busting climbs, narrow descents and a technical dry gulch section, Schalke along with teammates Kevin Wilkins and Jesse Petersen looked strong in the opening laps for a podium sweep. Unfortunately, a late race mishap sent Wilkins and Petersen tumbling. "Kevin waved me around him and I thought I could pass," Petersen explained. "Looking back, it was probably not the best decision." The decision did in fact cost Petersen, who was passed by a surging David Chase (Pearl Izumi) and Mike Johnson (SNORT). Wilkins held on to finish third. Schlake sits atop the points standings as the Battle Royale moves towards the Short Track competition June 23 at Branched Oak Lake.
