24 Hours of Adrenalin #2 & NORBA National 24 Hour championships
Laguna Seca, California USA, May 18-19, 2002
This weekend's round of the 24 Hours of Adrenalin series saw two races combined: the NORBA national 24 Hour championships on a 12.47 mile course and a 'regular' round of the series on a course that was two miles shorter.
The NORBA solo men's race was expected to be a battle between Klein's Rishi Grewal and Volvo-Cannondale's indefatigable Tinker Juarez, still at the top of his game despite recently celebrating his 40th birthday. At last year's event these rivals both dropped out due to exhaustion; this year they were expected to have planned better strategies.
Juarez had the early lead, but Grewal was not for behind for the first few hours, before slipping to third place and withdrawing, saying recent health problems meant he "just didnÕt have the juice to complete the race".
Grewal's departure left the way clear for Juarez to cruise in looking like he could continue for the rest of week to take the win after 262 miles.
In the women's division, Nancy Busching took the national championship with a 17-lap ride, ahead of Stella Carey and Cristina Begy, who were less than a minute apart after 16 laps!
