The event is considered one of the largest, longest, and most challenging races in the midwest. Kyia started the race off with a strong attack once the roll-out moved off the black top and onto the first section of dirt trail. Kyia had amassed a lead of just over 2 minutes on second place rider Linda Gabor (Trek/VW/JBL) and a top contender on the XTERRA triathlon circuit, at about the 6 mile mark of the 46 mile course, when she hit a nail on the trail and suffered a flat tire. Kyia made a reasonably quick change, and got back into the race about 2-3 minutes behind Linda who was now in the lead. Kyia worked hard to get back up to Linda by the half way point of the race, and rode with Linda until the 6 mile to go mark to recover from her bridging, where some course reconaissance the day prior to the race paid off. Kyia launched an attack into one of the few singletrack sections on the course, that was followed by a major sand pit and sandy descent generating an immediate gap on Linda. Kyia amassed a lead of nearly 3 minutes in the last 6 miles of the course and cruised across the line alone for the victory. A total of over 1,100 riders took part in the 2002 Ore to Shore.
