Transandeschallenge: Touching the snow at Volcan Villarica

Team "Scott que paso?" with Carlos Cardemil and Javier Puschel from Chile won the opening 70km stage crossing Pucon's ski center over the Volcan Villarica's ever-present snows. They finished with a time of 3:22:56.

The Ecuadorian team Cikla-Specialized finished second with Daniel Espinoza and Galo Tamayo while Team Wild Bike Vitalife's Daniela Bunzli and Francisco Corvalan were the third fastest for the day.

An international field of about 60 riders gathered at the start line opposite Pucon's City Hall. It was a rainy, Patagonian summer morning, but by 10:00 am, the sun appeared. After a 2km loop around the city on technical singletrack, racers headed out to Candelaria, and the leaders started to escape from the rest. They then rode to Pino Huacho across steep downhills and reached Pucon's ski centre at an altitude of 1400m.

"This first stage was useful for racers to adapt to the rythm of the race. They rode across technical paths surrounded by millenary forests," said Race Director Juan Pablo Santiagos.

Stage two, one of the toughest will make a loop around theVolcan Villarica and cover 100km.
