Minton and Clemens win in Florida

The 12 Hours of Santos was the "other race" that started the 2008 USA Cycling National Ultra-Endurance calendar. Many endurance racers who did not go to Texas for the Mas O Menos went to Florida instead.

Last year's 12 Hours of Razorback was in jeopardy after Razorback MTB Park's land owners sold the property to mining interests, but promoter Dave Berger of GoneRiding rallied his resources and moved the event to the Santos Vortex trails. Kona stayed onboard as title sponsor and the race became a late addition to the USAC ultra endurance calendar.

Harvey Minton (Independent Fabrication) took the solo win, with David Wood (Bare Naked-Cannondale) and Rob Lichtenwalner (Bare Naked-Cannondale) finishing second and third. The race started with Chris Janiszewski (Panoptx/BCCFL) off to an early lead, followed closely by David Hall (Charleston Bicycle Company), Aaron Snyder (South Mountain Cycles), Minton and Wood.

Janiszewski, Wood and Snyder continued to burn up the course while Minton stayed within a few minutes of the leaders. Lichtenwalner flatted early in the opening lap and worked his way up through the field, only to flat again later in the day. As the daytime heat took its toll, Minton slowly worked his way through the leaders, taking the lead for good during the 10th lap.

The women's solo race was won by Carol Clemens (Dirt Rag/Hoss/Lupine) on a singlespeed, with Rita Jett (The Great Bicycle Shop) and Julie Ficker taking second and third. Clemens and Jett traded places at the front all day, with Clemens finally pulling away in the latter laps and finishing with a 11 minute cushion.

Information in this report was contributed by Harvey Minton.
