Andrew gets victory bell

After finishing runner-up in last year's Scott 24 Hour Mountain Bike Championships Andrew Bell wasn't going to let another victory slip through his hands, so the National 24 hour Solo Champion pushed hard to ensure he claimed the 2007 title. After being put on a drip at the World 24 hour Solo Championships just last month, Bell was keen to clear away the demons that haunted him after racing in 40 degree Celsius heat in California. The 34 year-old from Melbourne didn't take to the lead until six hours into the race, while a late calculation of opponents laps forced Bell to ride his 29th lap while his challenger, Port Macquarie's Jason English, finished on 28 laps.
Bell checked on his condition throughout the night so as to avoid dehydration. "I weighed myself and I was the exactly the same weight," he noted. "That means that I'm hydrated whereas at the Worlds I was four kilograms lighter."
Early leaders, Thomas Lindup (Taranaki, New Zealand) and Hugh Stodart (North Bakgiwlah), were overtaken by Bell with a quick bike lights transition on Saturday evening. Lindup and Stodart finished with 28 laps and 27 laps respectively, giving them the third and fourth positions. "I knew there were quite a few a guys in front early in the race, I didn't expect that," said Bell. "A lot of the people were having a crack. I knew more about Jason's (English) ability than anyone else so he was the one I kept an eye on."

English lost valuable time when he suffered a mechanical problem on the third lap, however he regained ground over the following 20 hours to finish a creditable second.
Young Canberra rider Ben Henderson lost his fastest lap time, which he gained early on Saturday, to Athens Olympian Sid Taberlay (Hobart). Taberlay's team made a last ditch effort to better Henderson's 31'46", with the GU/SRAM/Nite Rider team allowing Taberlay to rest before taking a crack at the time at sunrise. Taberlay laid down a blistering time of 31'38"- some eight seconds quicker than Henderson's time earning him the AUS$4,000 prize purse. The fastest women's lap went to the Dirt Roads to London rider Rowena Fry from Launceston, with 37'11".
Taberlay was also a member of the fastest overall team, with the squad completing an impressive 38 laps. Second team overall were Flight Centre on 37 laps and third was the Orbea Pro Team with 35 laps.

In the women's division German mountain bike rider Alexandra Kiendl only wanted an Australian beer after she crossed the line with more laps than any other female rider. The 34 year-old suffered from the cold when temperatures plummeted to a single degree throughout the night. "I had everything on I owned," she said. Kiendl completed 23 laps finishing, 48 minutes in front of nearest rival Justine Leahy (Coffs Harbour).
The 2007 event is the first to be held at the Stromlo Forest Park venue since bush fires devastated the region in 2003. The 2003 fires were the third of their kind to tear through the pine forests of Stromlo, with the first taking place in the December of 1951 and again 50 years on in December 2001. The Stromlo Forest Park, the original birthplace of the Scott 24 Hour, had been replaced in recent years by a venue in Canberra's Kowen Forest. The venue will play host to the Mountain Bike World Cup and World Championships over the coming years, following the government's decision to re-develop the venue into a world-class multi-use, recreational sporting facility.
How the race unfolded
In the first four hours of racing, the elite four-person class was in full flight with the GU/SRAM/Nite Rider team leading by five minutes. There was a close tussle for second and third with only 20 seconds separating Orbea Pro team followed by the Flight Centre Scott Pro team.
The fastest women's team after four hours of racing was Canberra duo, Rebecca Henderson and Niki Fisher.
However the fastest lap time for men looked like a sealed deal. It appeared as though it would be impossible to improve on Ben Henderson's time of 31 minutes and 46 seconds. The strategy employed by Henderson was to ride the blue lap first then attack the red lap a full speed while the track was relatively clear. After the opening laps, with riders spreading across both loops, Sid Taberlay's time was off the pace by 20 seconds. Just two seconds further separated local rider Dylan Cooper with a further two seconds to Canberra's Sean Lewis who had ridden the red loop on each other's heels. The fastest women's lap also looked like a sealed deal with Rowena Fry riding a 37 minute and 11 second lap.
The race in the solos was only in its infancy but already it was Alexandra Kiendl leading by a minute and a half, Justine Leahy just behind.
In the men's solo race hot favourite, Andrew Bell was sitting comfortably in third with Wayne Anderson and Hugh Stodart in first and second respectively. Riding in fourth place was Thomas Lindup. Jason English suffered mechanical trouble in the opening laps and had to return to transition for attention. With a full 20 hours to go no one could have predicted any clear winners when temperatures were expected to plummet to one degree Celsius overnight.
With night classified as between 8:00 pm and 4:30 am, there was another fastest lap opportunity. Ben Mather from the Orbea Pro team won the fastest men's night lap in a time of 35 minutes and 27 seconds. His partner Rowena Fry also did the fastest night lap for women in a time of 41 minutes and 12 seconds.
Come daybreak the biggest move of the day was emerging as the GU/SRAM/Nite Rider team made a last ditch effort to claim the fastest lap.
"We realized I didn't have the best first lap," said Taberlay. After dropping a chain and riding an unknown descent it meant there may have been a chance of shaving off some time.
Taberlay's team mates sacrificed themselves throughout the night giving Taberlay some much needed rest. When the course was not so busy, Taberlay headed out at sunrise to attack the red lap and hopefully better Henderson's 31'47". Unluckily for Henderson, Taberlay recorded a time of 31'38" taking the record by just eight seconds. The ride took its toll though.
"That lap really knocked it out of my legs I was just sprinted around every corner," said Taberlay.
By breakfast time the GU/SRAM/Nite Rider team had reaffirmed their dominance with a total of 32 laps. The Flight Centre Scott PRO Team were now into second place equalled on 31 laps with the Spearman Cycles 1 team of six which included current Australian series downhill champion Amiel Cavalier. The Orbea Pro team was close in fourth spot.
For the solo riders the cold and the constant upkeep of food and hydration in transition had changed the men's race dramatically. In the evening Bell was the quickest to ‘light up' - mounting his mandatory lights and taking the lead as darkness came. Bell suffered stomach cramps in the early hours but altered his nutritional intake and just kept riding. Meanwhile the race for second was shaping up between English, Lindup and Stodart.
The women's solo race overnight saw Kiendl having difficulty keeping warm while Leahy started to suffer after the nine hour mark. Adjusting to new lights and adjusting to Canberra's chilly nights saw Leahy loose any hope of staying near Kiendl. By morning, Kiendl was busy taking on food to make up for her loss of intake in the early stages of the race.
Meanwhile the remainder of the field of over two thousand devised their own ways to get through to race end. Some tucked into a nice meal and a warm sleeping bag as darkness dropped, racing put to one side in favour of the carnival atmosphere at the huge event centre while others refined their strategy in order to keep riders out on the course all night long. One highlight for the night riders was the view from the top of the course, over the floodlit event centre and its surrounding tent city, with the lights of Canberra in the background. It was enough to make more than one rider pull to the side of the course in admiration.
While the race ended at midday, an official result was registered after 11:00 am and any riders out on course after mid-day had their laps added to their team's overall tally. Once the last of the weary riders had returned to the event centre the presentation got underway and the remaider of the $128,000 cash and prizes were distributed with many others handed out during the event. All that remained was for the various campsites to be packed up and plans hatched for next year.
