Day 2 - February 25: Downhill & Short Course

Cavalier quickest in downhill finale

Amiel Cavalier ended a stellar season by winning the fourth and final round of the Australian Downhill Mountain Bike National Series at Mt Beauty. The Wollongong rider's time of 3.15.21 was a full two seconds quicker than local rider Liam Panozzo, who took second place. Canberra's Jared Rando took third place a further half a second back while Rick Boyer from the Blue Mountains finished in fourth place.

The final round victory seals up the National Series title for Cavalier in just his first year competing at the elite level. "I was a bit nervous at the start," he admitted, "but I just went faster than I wanted to and it paid off at the end."

Despite a disappointing run for Adam Smithson that saw him finish in 11th place, the Novocastrian maintained his second position in the series standings. Adelaide's Dave West finished just after Smithson in 12th place and took home third place overall in the series.

Newcastle's Emma McNaughton blitzed the women's downhill field to finish in a respectable 4.05.47. Canberra's Claire Whiteman claimed second place from Sydney's downhill champion Joanne Fox who finished third. McNaughton had crashed in the first run and hurt her sternum but recovered well to finish the season on a strong note. "It's so good now to have six or more women," she said. "We get to races thinking 'now who's going to win today.'"

Her second place finished was enough to tie up the National Series title for Whiteman for the second consecutive year. Canberra's Caroline Buchanan claimed second overall in the series while Joanne Fox takes third place.

Victoria's Daniel McConnell out sprinted Tasmania's Sid Taberlay to take out the final short course cross country race of the season. Third was Paul Rowney who was involved in a crash on the first lap which held up the early leaders. Mayhem turned into a chase with Rowney rejoining the leaders before the final bell.

Murray Spink was chasing but could not join the breakaway leaders and finished in fourth.

In the women's event, local rider Tory Thomas passed Launceston's Rowena Fry in the final laps to win. Fry placed second and Julie Black was third.

After winning the Under 19 men's race, Joel Healy went on to win the combined sport event with Neil Van Der Ploeg in second and veteran rider Rob Evan in third.

With their seasons drawn to a close, mountain cross, Olympic cross country and downhill riders will now focus on the Oceania Championships in Thredbo in late March.
