Aussies dominate Oceania Championships
Australian riders dominated this year's Oceania Championships with the first four riders in the Pro-Elite Men's field and first place in Pro-Elite women.
There were 244 competitors over three categories - sport, expert and pro-elite. This tough course, over several of Rotorua's popular tracks, was a high 70 per cent technical - forcing competitors to keep concentration levels up for most of the course. The circuit was 7.4 kms in length with Pro-Elite men completing six laps and the women five.
In the Pro-Elite men's race, Sid Taberlay (Australia) finished first in a time of 2 hrs 7 mins and 37secs followed by Christopher Jongewaard (Australia) (2:09:19) and then Craig Gordon (Australia) (2:11:02). Stuart Houltham of Taupo, the NZ National Series winner for 2001, 2002 and 2003 was the first kiwi across the line in 7th position (2:15:56). Kashi Leuchs, our highest ranked XC rider, lead in the first lap and then dropped back to fifth position before bad luck struck in the form of a flat tyre in the second-to-last lap preventing him from finishing. Leuchs will be hoping to avoid such problems when he races in the NZ One-Off Champs in Wellington on the first of February. This will be his last race before he flies back to France.
In the women's Pro-Elite category it was Australian's top rider and the Junior World Champion 2002 and 2003, Lisa Mathison, who convincing took out the Oceania title, beating Robyn Wong of Wellington by four minutes in a time of 2 hrs 6mins 46secs. Wong finished in 2 hrs 10mins 47secs and it was Sonia Foote (Rotorua) who came third (2:11:38).
