Lincoln Plating Spring Cycling Classics - XC MTB #2

Branched Oak Lake, Area 7, Saturday, April 19, 2003

Jarrett slides to victory at XC MTB #2

By John Lefler, Jr

Two weeks ago at XC MTB #1, Stephen Jarrett (Highgear/LBC) was nipped at the line by Team Kaos rider, Kevin Wilkins in an exciting sprint finish. Saturday afternoon at Branched Oak Lake Area 7, there would be no fireworks for the finale as Jarrett powered his way to first place in slick, muddy trail conditions edging second place rider Matt Gersib (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth) by 00:42. The Expert event started without any rain, but the skies threatened and midway through the 19 mile contest opened up turning the 2.75 mile course into a skidpan. Despite the rain and greasy track, Jarrett rode unphased. Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth team leader, Matt Gersib and Jesse Reints (Penn Cycle/Nature Valley) rode well to round out the podium followed by LBC/Highgear rider Tony Wilhelm and Matt Savery (SNORT) in fourth and fift, respectively.

Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth rider Paul Chapman topped the Expert Masters 35+ field followed by Daneil Kelley (SNORT) and Kristian Ehrhorn (BBC).

While the Beginner and Sport events were free from rain, they were not without their own brand of excitement. Once again, the Sport events showcased a diverse bunch of talented riders with much potential heading into the Psycowpath MTB Series next month. Jeremiah Grell (UNL Cycling) brought his powerful road racing skills to the dirt for top honors in the Sport Open competition, while Mike Bartels (Team Revolution) took first in the Sport Masters 35+.

The 2003 Lincoln Plating Spring Cycling Classics conclude next Saturday, April 26 with the Haymarket Park Criterium. Pre-registration is available on www.active.com and closes Wednesday, April 23rd at 12:00am.
