Team Bulls celebrates fourth stage victory

Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm (Team Bulls) won the second-to-last stage from Bad Steben to Schoeneck. Both pros reached the finish after 98 kilometres and 2,217 metres of elevation gain in a time of 3:46:07 hours. They were followed by Saxony's riders Frank Lehmann and Thomas Nicke of Rothaus-Cube in 3:46:36. Another, three seconds later, Andreas Strobel and Silvio Wieltschnig of Team Fiat Rotwild rounded out the podium.

The special climbing classification for the "Green Jersey of the Bayerischen Staatsforsten" at the Doebraberg was won by Platt and Sahm in 10:47.3 minutes. As a result of that effort, they and three more teams pulled clear of the rest of the field. All four headed toward the finish together, but on the last ascent up to Schoeneck, the teams separated.

"Today was pretty muddy and grassy. We had to stop about ten times and get rid of the grass in our wheels. At the last hill, we thought 'Let's give it a try,' and it worked out," said Platt. His teammate Sahm added, "It was really nasty with all the mud."

Nicke of Rothaus Cube confirmed the run of today's leg. "Today, it was very hard for us because we didn't catch much sleep. Karl and Stefan were also doing very good at the first hill, too. At the last ascent, where Karl pulled off, we crucified ourselves." But both riders from Saxony weren't disappointed at all that they couldn't win the stage ending in their home region. "It's not a shame to lose against those two. Today, the speed in the leading group was very high but we will see how we can do tomorrow. For sure, it would be nice to win the final stage in Oberwiesenthal," said Lehmann.

On the women's side, Team Fiat Rotwild experienced a very bitter day. Danièle Troesch was forced to watch her partner Kerstin Brachtendorf give up after half an hour. "It's very sad but she didn't have any power anymore. Kerstin was so tired and totally out of energy due to her stomach problems of the last days," said the French rider who now will finish the race all alone.

Therefore, the lead of today's winning Team Cube Wls grew even more. Danish Anna-Sofie and Kristine Norgaard completed the 98 kilometres in 4:32:25 hours and are now sitting on the top spot of the women category with a lead of 40 minutes on Zwillingscraft which came in second (4:36:44). Maybe the gap for the Klose twins, who had some problems on the first three legs, would have been smaller, "but we underestimated the race. It's harder than we ever expected – sometimes even harder than the Transalp," explained Sandra Klose. Team Bad Steben secured the third spot (4:56:53).

On the other hand, Alison Sydor and Carsten Bresser didn't show any weakness. On the seventh leg, the Canadian-German duo took home the seventh triumph (4:13:38). Like yesterday, Bobteam.Info finished second (4:59:17). Team Zwillingscraft 2 reached Schoeneck as third (5:05:40).

Sachsenteam von Welt, consisting of Robert Novotny and Milan Spolc, are not giving the other master teams any chance. After 3:55:56 hours, the two Czechs rolled over the finish line and thus celebrated their seventh consecutive victory. The Scott Racing Team Heilenmann followed as second with a time of 4:16:25. Six minutes and 25 seconds later than the Scott-bikers, duo Mars Rotweis-Bikemax made it to Schoeneck.

Erich Stephan and Eugen Roehrle of Die Finisher were able to enlarge the lead in the grand master category which they had taken over yesterday winning today's seventh leg (4:39:04). After 750 cycled kilometres both are still ready for some more action. "It's hard for sure, but we are very happy that it's going so well for us. We have a lot of fun," underlined Erich Stephan after the race. Today's second senior master team was Vo Dr Alb Ra (4:57:25) ahead of team Deutsche Post (5:00.48), which was able to secure their first podium spot. Today's fourth placed Taunusgazellen 106 (5:14:13) are still second in the overall senior ranking, but already 36 minutes behind of Die Finisher..

The top three in the special climbing classification for the Green Jersey of the Bayerischen Staatsforsten were Team Bulls, Rothaus-Cube, and Fiat Rotwild.

Tomorrow's final stage 8 goes from Schoeneck to Oberwiesenthal. Participants will travel 80km and climb 1,900 meters.
