Gould wins again and captures series title

Georgia Gould (Luna Women's MTB Team) won the cross country ahead of team-mate Katerina Nash and Heather Irminger (Subaru / Gary Fisher). In fact, the top five riders were all of Subaru / Gary Fisher or Luna - a result consistent with other events this year. Shonny Vanlandingham (Luna) and Willow Koerber (Subaru / Gary Fisher) rounded out the podium.
Gould moved quickly and strategically to the front of the field. "I had a good start and I knew it was important to be first going into the singletrack. It's a 20 minute climb, almost all on singletrack and pretty steep, and there was potential for gaps to form there."
"The second, third, and fourth place riders were right there up the whole climb," said Gould. "There were a few times when I heard Katerina behind me. After the first loop at the top, I didn't see or hear anyone any more."
By the feed zone on the first lap, Gould had 15-20 seconds on Nash according to one observer, and she said someone gave her a 30 second split. The others were strung out at intervals behind the lead two riders. The order would stay pretty much the same until the finish. Gould would win with a comfortable 1'48" gap.
But along the way, she never let up. "30 seconds is not that much if you have a few bobbles," said Gould. "The second time through (the feed zone) no one told me the gap. I knew they weren't far behind. I try to always ride as if someone is right behind me."
The course was different than previous years. It started lower down the mountain, so racers climbed further up to do laps at the top before a long descent to the end. Gould said she rode the final technical descent well.
Gould proved her consistancy with yet another win during a stellar 2007 season during which she has dominated the cross country. Her team-mate Nash also proved she's stepped up her cross country game this year with this high altitude second place finish.
Long-time pro and Coloradoan Shonny Vanlandingham, who tends to excel at high altitude events, said she would be shifting her focus in 2008 to compete more often in XTerras, racing less in mountain bike only events.
Gould's win locked up her overall title with 910 points after completing a perfect record by taking all six victories.. Nash was second, with 825 points, and Vanlandingham third with 809 points. The Luna trio was definitely the team to beat at NMBS events all season. Irminger and Koerber rounded out the series podium.
