8th Polaris Challenge Australia - NE

Mud and rain at 2004 Australian Polaris

It seems that every time the Polaris MTB Challenge visits an area with a pleasant sounding name, the heavens open. In 2000 it was the legendary 'Sunny' Corner near Bathurst. This weekend just past, 6/7 March, 600 riders descended upon 'Pretty' Beach in Murramarang National Park north of Batemans Bay and received a soaking from the rain gods and a filthy appearance from the mud angels.
It all started innocuously enough with the riders pouring into the district on Friday night; from SA, Queensland, Victoria, WA, NSW and Victoria, from Belgium and the USA. The sky was clear, the surf rolling gently in below the start line set up above the beach with one of NSW's finest coastal views. They madly marked up maps and prepared their gear for 2 days challenging riding in a 25km x 25km area of rugged bush, mountain and coastline that spread from Bawley Point to Batemans Bay and inland to the the Clyde River country and beyond. All in teams of 2, all carrying enough gear for 2 days including an overnight camp.
Calmness and sunshine prevailed for the start on Saturday morning as the riders, in teams of two, headed off into the wide blue yonder. Soon though, blue turned to grey and the first raindrops fell, lightly at first, then with more purpose. The riders were seeking out a selection from 39 checkpoints scattered throughout the area, using the specially prepared map. Checkpoints that included the highest mountain tops of Durras and Mogood, the deepest trackless gullies in the State Forests, where bikes had to be dragged, pushed or carried in frustratingly slow progress, each dripping bush adding another soaking. Checkpoints that included on beaches, atop cliffs, 50 metres crawling inside a cave. Even Superman put in an appearance as a checkpoint on the aptly named Lois Lane! The theme this year was MTB - MounTain Beach.
There was mud, there was blood. There were grimaces and smiles. Broken bikes (many), broken bones (but not too many!). The secret overnight camp was announced to the riders at the start line. After 7 hours riding, all teams would eventually find their way to Shallow Crossing on the Clyde River, to set up camp and try and recharge batteries for the day ahead. The rain fell steadily. Bikes were taken to the river in an effort to remove the worst of the mud and grit. That is until they discovered the tide was running in and the river was salt, not fresh. $5000 of bike+mud+salt = $0 of bike. Meagre rations were consumed and they slept; the falling rain drowning out the noise of snoring from neighbouring tents packed like sardines.
And what for? For many just to take part in an event that moves around the country each year; one of the most challenging and largest mountain bike events in the country. But with $25,000 of prizes on offer, competition was fierce. At the top end the riders were competing for the chance to fly to the UK to compete in the sister event over there, courtesy of Emirates Airlines, one of the event sponsors.
At the end of Day 1, Veterans and 2002 winners, Gwyn Taverner-Smith/Ken Wilyman after riding over 100km, had 330 points and held a 13 point lead over the Mixed Teams of Alina McMaster/Tom Landon-Smith and Rosemary King/Toby Cogley, fresh from their successes on the worldwide multisport events. The Sydney based Mens team of Michael Meryment/Matt de Belin were in 4th with 310 points closely followed by Queensland based former Ironman champion Guy Andrews riding with Stu Adams.
After packing in the still falling rain at dawn on Sunday, it was off again to eventually finish back at Pretty Beach where now the surf was pounding and wind howling. Bikes were struggling on the now energy sapping muddy tracks. But still the lead teams made rapid progress and collected more points.
Sodden control cards were deciphered and the final results poured out of the computer. Riders told their tales of losing points or partners or just getting lost.
In the end De Belin/Meryment put in an awesome second day's effort to total 540points and take out the overall 2004 Polaris Challenge and 1st place in the Mens. Andrews/Adams moved into 2nd place overall (520pts) and 2nd place in the Mens. Taverner-Smith/Wilyman (510pts) fell back into 3rd place overall but easily won the Veterans Class.
The 2003 champions Jez Spackman/Ian Stewart (510) took 3rd place in the Mens. 2003 Womens champions, Julie Quinn/Sam Reinhardt (316pts) held onto their title. In the Mixed, McMaster/Landon-Smith and King/Cogley tied for first place on 457pts - the two teams rode together the whole weekend. David Griffith/Chris Lello won the Super Veterans category with 310 points.
