Jez Spackman and Ian Stewart take seventh Aussie Polaris

Last weekend 295 teams of two riders headed to Burraga in the Central Tablelands of NSW to compete in the 2003 Polaris Mountain Bike Challenge, one of Australia's most popular and challenging MTB events.
This was the 7th Polaris Challenge, an event held in a different region each year. 2 days of riding, navigating and camping to gain as many points as possible in a 25km x 25km area of rugged bush and forest.
The theme of 2003 was Granny Gear, slang for the lowest gear on a mountain bike. Without exception, the riders concurred that 2003 was indeed the year for the granny gear with plenty of hills to test the riders over the two days. Those brave enough, descended into the depths of Abercrombie River National Park whilst Mt David State and Vulcan State Forests, although less steep, still offered plenty of hill climbs to challenge weary legs and lungs.
Despite some threatening storm clouds at the Saturday camp (offering spectacalur lighting and lightning shows), the weather stayed fine and the equally fine dust clung to sweat soaked bodies.
The Polaris always offers some offbeat aspects, and this year was no exception with many teams taking the Granny Gear challenge further, riding the weekend in Granny fancy dress or competing in the sideshows such as the granny hill push. Checkpoints included a crocodile 30 metres into a dam - a scary swim out for some!, a real granny as well as the usual mountain tops, river crossings, old bush huts and track junctions.
Teams from throughout Australia and NZ were competing in Mens, Womens, Mixed, Veterans, Super Veterans and Under 21s categories. The Mens team of Jez Spackman/Ian Stewart from Trek Bikes held a solid lead after the 7 hours of Day 1 and sustained this to amass a total score of 653 points after the 5 hours of Sunday. They rode a total of 160km over the 2 days. The Blue Mountains team of Adrian Laing/Saxon Johns pulled up in second place overall with 620 points just 10 points ahead of the winning Veterans team of Chris Waring/Robert Watson in third place overall.
The Womens competition was extremely tight at the end of Day 1 with Robyn Simionato/Penny Maher only 10 points ahead of four other teams. In their eagerness to hold this lead, they bit off more than they could chew on Sunday and finished late, thus losing all their points for the day. This left the gate open for Julie Quinn/Sam Reinhardt of Canberra to take the women's title for 2003.
The popular Mixed Category was won by the Victorian team of Karen Hopkinson/Rob Russell with 510 points. Rob Russell showing his multisports skills, after his victory in the 2002 Paddle Polaris event last December. With the Granny Gear theme it was good to see a record number of Super Veterans teams (combined age of >100 years) this year with Norm McCann/Rick Armstrong heading the 17 other teams with 440 points.
285 teams made it to the start line on Saturday morning with 268 teams crossing the finish on Sunday afternoon. 8 teams were disqualifed for various misdemeanours.
The 2003 Polaris Challenge was the final event in the 2002/2003 Strong Butt League of endurance mountain biking events. Jez Spackman had another reason to celebrate, by overhauling Ian Wright to take out the Mens Strong Butt League. Mel McIntyre retained her position as Womens Strong Butt champion.
As well as the competition itself, the Polaris Challenge raised thousands of dollars for 4Wheels4Sean, a charity dedicated to providing for those severely disabled as a result of a cycling accident, as well as the Volunteer Rescue Assn and the local community of Burraga. The tiny village of Burraga put the whole village at the disposal of the event and mucked in to offer a superb level of support as well as catering for the masses.
