By Carolynn Locke Springtime storms hit the Midwest hard this past week putting up a foot of rain in areas. This didn't stop nearly 100 diehard racers from taking part in round #2 of the Midwest Fat Tire Championship Series. The Bluffriders Mountain Bike Race was held Sunday in Neosho, Missouri. Great weather - 60 and sunny - greeted the riders in the morning, but it was the previous week's rain that made the course a challenge. The Beginners were the first to tackle the course and set the early lap times of under 40 minutes which meant that most everyone would do 2 laps on the Bicycle Specialist designed course - under a new format beginners race for a minimum of 1 hour and Sport/Expert race for a minimum of 1 ½ hours. The Women's class was won by Mizzou's Morris who was the only woman to complete one lap in under an hour and do two laps on the demanding course. Cheri Palmeri took second place with Amy Philliops the final podium spot. In the Men's Expert classes, Cow Town Cycling Team's own Damian Almanza and Chris Locke took the top spots in each of their respective classes. The Women's Expert class was won by Rebecca Lomshe. The Expert Men's class was a battle between Jon Langworthy, Chris Ellis & Almanza. Positions changed several times but it came down to Almanza early season form that earned him is first Expert class win. Chris Locke and Lynn Huhs were able to open up an early lead over The Wheel Cyclery's Dan Jordan and the other Vet Expert riders. The muddy course suited Locke well as he cruised in for the win. In the Sport classes some very strong rides were put in by the class winners. Both Matthew Staub (29 under) and Jason Stiger (30 - 39) were able to catch many of the Expert class riders who started ahead of them. In the always competitive Single Speed class, B. Brenfoeder won ahead of Bike Sources' Mark Cole and E. Davis. Cow Town's Brain Bass finished in fourth. The Sport Men's 30 - 39 was dominated by Jason Stiger with Todd Selveg, Bike Stop's Ron Acklin and Cow Town's Gerard Arantowics battling it out for the remaining podium spots. If you didn't make it down to Neosho you missed a great race. Even with the wet conditions, the trail was for the most part in good condition - thanks to all the volunteers who maintain it. A post race party was held witch featured fried catfish. Plenty of SWAG was handed out thanks to Bicycle Specialist, The Wheel Cyclery and the rest of the MFTCS sponsors.
