19th Intermountain Orthopaedics White Knob Challenge

August 2-3, 2003

Eric Jones and Mary McConneloug finish on top

Eric Jones of Team Biogen, Salt Lake City, Utah and number one ranked NORBA Pro Mary McConneloug of Team Seven Cycles, took the pro men's and women's cross-country races at The 19th Annual Intermountain Orthopaedics White Knob Challenge.

The White Knob is the longest running mountain bike race in the Northwest and a designated NORBA classic. Set in the incredible Big Lost River Valley just outside of rustic Mackay, Idaho, White Knob racers faced 3000 feet of climbing and 20 miles of racing amongst beautiful scenery and antique mining relics.

Other top finishers in the cross-country race included 2nd place for Team Devo's Michael McClure, 3rd for Sobe-Cannodale's, Shawn Mitchell, 4th for Tomac's Craig Sandstrom and 5th for McConneloug's teammate Michael Broderick.

For the first time this year, the White Knob Challenge featured an optional omnium won by Craig Sandstrom of Pocatello and Georgia Gould of Ketchum. The White Knob Challenge is a fund-raiser for Mackay Ambulance and the White Knob Historical Preservation Society.

More than just a mountain bike race, the White Knob is an event. The bike racers took over Mackay's tourist park on Friday and Saturday night for pre and post race revelries. A total of 168 racers took to the mountain--an increase of 21% from 2002. Riders came from as far east as Maine and as far west as California.

The first set of pictures is already posted with more to come. All are welcome use the pictures on our website as yet another memory of the mountain bike classic.
