26 year old Pawel Niedzwiecki riding for the Polish Mroz team won today's second stage, a 30 kilometre criterium along the seafront of Nelson Bay. It was the team's second stage win of the day after Grzegorz Wajs powered in the morning, and they have begun to stamp their authority on the bike race.

The race was decided by the first break of the day, which went on lap one. Apart from Niedzwiecki, there was New Zealander Jaarod Poad (Glen Parker Cycles) and Brit Dan Smith (QANTAS) who took second and third respectively. The trio worked evenly from the outset, and were helped by some handy blocking work from their teammates in the bunch. Their gap was at most 25 seconds but gradually came down inside the final five laps.

With three laps to go it was 14 seconds, which came down to 11 seconds on the bell lap. It wasn't enough for the NSW Institute or the Casino Canberra riders to close it down, although they tried. Niedzwiecki led from a long way out to pip Poad, while Smith was nearly mown down by Jans Koerts who took fourth.

Koerts corners

Koerts had fallen midway through the race when he slipped out around one of the corners after puncturing his front wheel. However, he rallied strongly to win the bunch sprint. "Thank God I didn't bring anyone else down," he said, bleeding profusely afterwards. It was his second puncture of the day, but he still ended in second overall.

Koerts hasn't written off his chances overall, and will "see how he goes" in tomorrow's stage to Bumble Hill. However, he will await the results of an x-ray to his left hand, the same one that he broke earlier this season in the Tour of Flanders.

26 year old Pawel Niedzwiecki, who raced to 16th overall in the Herald Sun Tour, was a little surprised at today's win, saying that he "just wanted to have a play and didn't think that it would work out that way ". At one point he was threatening the yellow jersey, but finished with a 20 second bonus to move up to sixth overall.

He modestly describes his hill climbing as "average" but he is clearly a threat to the overall lead, and tomorrow's stage will be interesting. Both he and Wajs will be closely watched by the rest and will surely put the pressure on up the steep final climb.
