This year's Cycle Classic has 15 teams each
with five riders. There is a mixture
of Australian and international teams.
Last year's winner, Cezary Zamana of Polish
team Mróz will not be defending his title after finishing second in the
Tour
of Poland in September. Lithuanian Raimondas Rumsas, who won the last
two Poland stages to finish fourth behind teammates Zamana and Tomasz Brozyna,
will lead the team in the Australian race. Mróz includes three World
Championship RR survivers: Piotr Wadecki (16th), Rumsas (26th) and Zbigniew
Piatek (30th). The top three riders in the Slovenia team also saddled up
in the Worlds, although only Gorazd Stangelj finished.
Likely frontrunners include Marcel Wüst of Festina, and Michael Rogers
from the Casino Canberra team who won a silver medal at the U-23
Time Trial at the Worlds in Treviso. Festina also boasts Jonathan
Hall, who won the TT at the Australian
national championships. This year's Bank race also sees a return of
Scott Sunderland, who has recovered from major injuries caused in an accident
in Europe last year. He will lead the QANTAS One team, which includes
Cameron Hughes who scored a top 5 finish in the Melbourne
to Warrnambool on October 9.
