Race details 1999
Cycle Classic
Welcome
to the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic 2000!
The Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic is in
its 19th and last year in 2000. Although this is the final edition, the
race leaves behind a long legacy of champions who have competed in this
unique event. In the past 19 years, 76 Olympic Games gold medallists or
World Champions have contested the race, including this year's Olympic
Road Race Champion and 1997 Tour de France winner, Jan Ullrich.
This year, the race will continue to focus
attention of the towns and locations that have been successful during
the past five years. The route however has been altered a little as the
race attempts to capitalise on daylight saving for the very first time
- with the event staged in November to avoid clashing with the Paralympic
Games. The same successful formula will however be in place featuring
eight criteriums, three circuit races, four road stages and the time trial
as the penultimate stage.
Stage 6 (Nov. 7) this year is from Salamander
Shores to the crest of Bumble Hill, the first ever stage mountain top
finish. Race organiser, Phill Bates said "People have been suggesting
a hill top finish for some time but with the decision to stage the Commonwealth
Bank Classic for the last time - it is important to focus attention on
one of the major hills of the race but also to honour a former great champion
in Darren Smith".
That, combined with 15 other challenging
criteriums and road stages will help to make this final Classic one to
remember. Once again, you will be able to follow all the action through
this site, which will feature complete results, reports and photos as
the race progresses.
