Richmond Ciclismo Cyclocross Series #1
Race #1, Bryan Park, Virginia, January 5, 2003

January 5th was a a day for two firsts: the first race in Virginia in 2003 and the first cyclocross race ever to be held in Richmond's scenic Bryan Park. The fast, but still challenging, course more than satisfied those who braved the weather forecast to compete in race #1 of the Richmond Ciclismo Cyclocross Series. Fortunately, the snow held off and the weather was perfect for a race on a European style course.
The C race was dominated by 16 year old Gonzalo Escobar of Squadra Coppi, who won by several minutes over the rest. Cary Quarles took the Men's C category, while Pam Zimmerman edged out Susan Revere for the Beginner Women's title. Evolution's David Flickinger won the Men's B race in convincing style, while Dave Olds and Melanie Swartz took the Men's 45+ and Expert Women categories respectively.
Home cookin' was on the menu for the Men's A race, with Richmond Ciclismo rider Zack Rickey stomping away from the pack to take his first ever cyclocross win. Scott Ramsey of Extreme Sports took 2nd, while Chimborazo Grand Prix promoter Chip Atkins rounded out the podium. The second race takes place on January 19th, and will surely attract a good crowd.
