Jonny Sundt (K2) took a convincing win over power-meister Dale Knapp (Kona) and Shannon Skerrit (Trek) making the trip up from Portland. It felt like a Supercup, with a new course design providing ample viewing points of the fast and open course from a central festival area with restrooms, great announcing and lunch available! Kids age 2-11 race for free at noon, with a raffle open to everyone at 12:40 each race. (results bottom of page). Thanks to our Race Day sponsor: Honey Stinger, a natural honey based gel, try a sample at these races: Upcoming Races (Directions and details at: groups.msn.com/Radsport/seattlemetroseries2002.msnw) Over 250 racers toed the line and found out if their days of sweat, preparation and bike tweaking would pay off against last years rivals. There were a few suprises in the super strong REI Masters categories with much larger fields than last year, which was the norm for all categories on the strongest opening day in history for the Seattle Series. Most of the buzz was on the new course, which transformed an old friend into a fabulous world class course. New were open spectator friendly areas, faster sections with plenty of passing room, and areas with a number of technical challenges that allowed skills to shine...or not. With the feature race at 2pm won in a runaway by Jonathan Sundt K2, it was the REI Masters races which provided the most drama on a day that introduced some new "boss men" to the top of the leader board in the very competitive Masters A and B classes. Phil Oppenheimer scored an excellent win over hard charging John Weller and David Brunning in the A race. The race started off with course designer Pat Bentson (Rad Racing) firing off the line like a cannon shot, and causing chaos behind as Todd Anderson and Big Daddy Jim Brown (Rad Racing) following in hot pursuit. Todd would retire with a bad crash and shoulder injury, and Bid Daddy had a number of mechanical problems and flat tires that forced him onto 4 different bikes changes in the pits, and pushed him back to fight for 4th overall. Notable newcomer to the Fastest Masters was 5th place Dana Parnello (Novara/REI). The REI Masters B's had a full field of 30 "Go-ers" with Tom Phillips taking first place over newcomer Andy Dahlstrom. Andy was a fixture on the NW racing scene in the 80's and 90's until his teaching brought the family to Vermont for the past 3 years. Word on the street is that Andy had been doing some high level cross training that may make him a threat further up the latter by the end of the season... I'll let him give you the details. Kevin Reinkensmeyer from Tacoma finished 3rd in the Master B's. Great race. The Killer B Men's field saw another Broadmark rider (Sundt races in the Broadmark colors on the road) go away, and stay away from the gun, as John Kettman ran away from Matt Hayes and A. Dickson, with Mark Howlett in hot pursuit. The beginning men also had a runaway winner with Husky racer Jimmy Lingwood taking a very decisive victory over Shawn McDonald and Matt Simms. The single speed category was won in a big way by Jesse Carbaugh, followed by Adam Van Dyke and Paul Priest. Troy Coleman took the first collegiate category flying the Husky Colors. Junior's had 4 categories, which started with the little REI kids age 2-11 racing around the cinder oval and providing fantastic fun for everyone with little Redline outfits, training wheels, and the winner sporting a UCI legal Pink Basket! The Dahlstrom family had 2 racers in the top 4, with their daughter winning with the pink basket. Thanks to all the Mom's and Dad's and the ASC/Genisoy team for putting on the best half time entertainment in cycling. The fastest kids under 18years old, the junior A's, was won in a split decision by the duo of Rad Racers Collin Carbaugh and Devin Anderson. These two worked in a team time trial format and never were more than 2 feet from each other all the way to the finish. Morgan Schmitt from Roslyn was a strong 3rd. Junior B's was won by Dan Nyens, followed by Aaron Renner and Jon Jennerjahn. The junior C's, which is the first age where kids do a lap of the BIG BOY course, was won by mystery rider #98, followed by Brendon Anderson and Travis Gutherie. The women's race saw a slightly larger field as the number of new women continues to climb through the beginning and Women's B categories. Jeanette Nussbaum (Kona/Kenwood) rode a strong and dominant race, leaving it a race for 2nd place. Jossie Begg's was riding strong until a flat tire forced her to lose time, and get passed by Kristi Berg in the bike-pit area. Jossie fought back, and eventually passed her, and the always strong Wanda Howlett also found renewed strength and caught Kristi after she overcooked herself a bit trying to stay ahead of Jossie. The Masters Women was won by Nicola Mann. The beginning Women and Women B's fields continue to grow as more and more women are finding the joys of cross. Anne Spaete from Yakima won the Beginning women's race, followed by Robyn Embry and Diane Conway, fresh from her beginning cross clinic the week prior. In the Women's B's race, Jodi Hess moved up from beginners to take the intermediate field over Sarah Bender from Everett and Kim Birgh-Pitkanen on team Subway. Thanks to all the racers/ family/ friends and supporters who show up and make this a great fall pastime. The officials, registration folks, concessions, Dave and the awesome Red Trailer, Pat Bentson course designer and everyone who pitched in and helped us clean up, set up and tear down, you make racing great. Thankyou to our sponsors: Microsoft, REI, Honeystinger, TiCycles, Redline, Gregg's Greenlake Cyclery, Time, Bikefit, Parkland Bicycles Next race in the Microsoft Seattle Cyclocross Series is this Sunday at South SeaTac. Organized public practices at Highpoint and Marymoor park begin Wednesday evenings in October and November at 6:15pm. Check out www.marymoorvelodrome.org for details and directions.
