Coupe du Monde Cyclo-Cross #1 - CDMFrankfurt, Germany, November 24, 20022001 Results Results World Cup standings Past winners First blood to WellensBart Wellens (Bel, Spaar Select) became the first leader of the Cyclo-Cross World Cup after winning Round 1 in Frankfurt. The Belgian rode superbly to head home his compatriots Mario De Clercq and Sven Nijs, who finished 13 seconds behind. Richard Groenendaal (Ned) was the best placed foreign rider in fourth place, as the Belgians once again proved their superiority in cyclo-cross. In clear, cool conditions, the race was held over 10 laps of a 2.65 km course that was considered technical but fast. Being one of the lower ranked Belgians, Wellens had to start in the fifth row. However, he made up most of the deficit in the first lap. By this early stage, Sven Nijs had already taken the lead of the race together with Richard Groenendaal. On Lap 3 they were caught by Wellens and Mario De Clercq, with another Belgian, Erwin Vervecken, chasing a little further back. The next group contained Czechs Jiri Pospisil and Vaclav Jezek, French Dominique Arnould, Dutch Gerben de Knegt the other two Belgians Tom Vannoppen and Sven Vanthourenhout. After a few attacks by Nijs, the leading group was eventually broken up by Wellens, who attacked on Lap 7. Nijs went with him while De Clercq and Groenendaal were left chasing behind. Wellens proved to be too strong for Nijs, and dropped him on the eighth lap despite a flat tyre. Wellens rode most of the lap on the flat before changing to his spare bike. Amazingly he still had a lead by the end, with two laps to go. Wellens maintained the gap to De Clercq and Nijs, with De Clercq getting the better of Nijs in the sprint for second. Groenendaal was another 4 seconds back, with Vervecken taking 5th at 54 seconds. "I was very good today," said Wellens. "The crucial moment in this race was a flat tyre. I thought that I had lost it. I'm lucky that I didn't fall due to the flat. "My condition is very good and I hope to win this year a big series like the UCI Cyclo Cross World Cup."
