The large field was an indication of the way this series has cemented itself in the heart and soul of US 'cross. The Rex Boyes-designed circuit, 2.6 km per lap featured "Poison Oak Hill", a near vertical 50 yard climb from the corrals and barns that make up much of the fairgrounds. On the first lap Jacques-Maynes, Jackson Stewart, Justin Robinson, and John Funke led the ascent and pushed the throttles wide open. Robinson and Jacques-Maynes led at the start of lap 2 with Stewart dangling 10 seconds behind and his Clif Bar teammate David Wyandt recovering from poor starting grid position to eventually challenge Funke by lap 4. Those 2 dueled neck and neck right to the finish line in a flat-out sprint that gave the fairgrounds crowd their moneys worth. Funke is enjoying his best ever Surf City season finishing 3rd overall in the series and looks primed to improve on last year's Nationals where he finished 10th in Baltimore in the 30+ Masters race. Robinson was the early diesel for the Spokesmen team and left earth trajectory behind until he wrapped his chain for the first time. After a bike change Stewart and Jacques-Maynes caught him upon re-entry and Ben launched with Robinson now assigned to guard duty over the Clif Bar leader. Jacques-Maynes was now programmed for super-cruise mode, hoisting his bike left-handed up Poison Oak Hill, he dropped Stewart and finished the Surf City season with a clean sweep of the podium, winning all 4 events. For the Clif Bar and Spokesmen teams, it was a monster weekend, both traveling and riding as the group flew home Saturday night from Soldier Hollow from the 2nd round of Redline Cup and arrived without significant travel blues to line up for Sundays start. Only Andy Jacques-Mayne from Clif Bar didn't make the start line at Surf City after his 3rd place finish, battling the Mongoose team in Utah. Making a surprise start was Robinson's former team mate from their Bontrager days in the last millennium - none other than Damon Kluck who recently signed a contract with US Postal. In his first 'cross race since 1999, Kluck stayed out of trouble for Johan Bruyneel's sake and searched the memory banks for the intensity needed for 60 minutes in the red zone to eventually finish 9th and yes, boss - no damage to the engine. Rachel Lloyd easily continued her mastery of the Elite women's field as the Clif Bar team stayed on the sidelines after Soldier Hollow. The next meeting for the potential US World's team members will be at the west coast UCI events in Seattle and Portland this coming weekend. At their last meeting at the Aptos 'hurricane' round of Surf City Clif Bar finished 1-2 with Lloyd suffering from reduced vision in 3rd place while in the first UCI west coast races, Clif Bar's Gina Hall and Lloyd traded victories.
