The sun peeked out to offer some respite for riders and spectators from the stinging winds and bitter temperatures, which hovered in the upper teens for most of the day. The long, winding course at Standing Bear Lake offered a generous mix of trail, grass and paved surfaces spanning the entire northern section of the lake. The wide-open nature of the course kept Thomas and company relatively close in the first lap. However, it was not long before a lead group containing Thomas and NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos riders Joe McWilliams and Paul Chapman pulled away from the field. In the closing moments, it became apparent the race would be won in a sprint, which Thomas took over McWilliams and a trailing Chapman. The win was the third overall victory for Thomas in the 2002 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series, which was more than any other rider in this year's events. In the day's earlier events, Rick Barrett (UNL Cycling) powered his way to a solo win in the Cat. 4/5 contest, while Marie Neville (NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos) and Jared Shuttleworth (Husker Road Club) completed their sweeps of the Women's and Masters 35+ fields, respectively. In the Junior's race, Chris Jones motored his way through the Standing Bear course to grab top honors. The 2002 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series was a smashing success on many levels. Most notably, it is the first time in recent memory that Nebraska has hosted a cyclo-cross series of this length in both Lincoln and Omaha. The success of the series is a direct result of the sponsorship support from the following: Sandhills Publishing, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska Health System, Hyland Brothers Lumber, Cycle Works, Olympia Cycle, Blue's Bike & Fitness, Bike Rack Cycling & Fitness, Lincoln Bicycle Co., American Classic, Voler Team Apparel, Spy Optics, Pedro's, Bruegger's Bagels, Icon Graphics, Pepsi, Aquafina, All Sport, Omaha Parks & Recreation, Lincoln Parks & Recreation, Husker Road Club, Team Kaos Cycling Special thanks to all of the volunteers and officials who volunteerd their time and efforts to make this series happen!
