For those lucky enough to be present, the 2002 Oregon Men's Cyclo-cross Championship race will be remembered as one of the greats. After an exhilarating race-long battle, Kona/Kenwood's Barry Wicks signaled that he is ready to take over from his teammate Erik Tonkin as the state's 'King of 'Cross' at the Estacada Timber Park on November 24. Meanwhile, the unassuming Rhonda Mazza (Team S&M/Vanilla) repeated her double victory from last year as she dominated for her second straight Oregon Women's Cyclo-cross Championship as well as ensuring that her name is etched in the 'Cross Crusade Cup. The Estacada Timber Park round is a traditional style cyclocross course in the European tradition and measures a whopping 3.9 kilometers, making it the longest circuit of the season. Set in the Cascade foothills, the course features several lightning fast sections interspersed with several steep parts that racers could run or ride. A new feature for this year's course was a mud pit that had the consistency of sticky peanut butter. The course had competitors riding it once and then came right back through it via the "MacTarnahan's Six-Pack" of barriers. Lining Up for the FinishDespite a frantic opening section that looked more crit' than 'cross, the three protagonists stood above the field from the first of seven laps. Wicks, Tonkin and Shannon Skerritt (Trek/VW/Bike Gallery) were at the front of a strung out Category A Men's field. With a state championship and double points on the line, the stakes were definitely higher than previous weeks. As Tonkin has shown this season he prefers to control from the front, so he spent the early laps driving the pace and ensuring that the trio stayed away - which he did to the tune of 30 seconds per lap. A second group formed that consisted of a compelling battle among five men, led by Trek/VW/Bike Gallery's Derl Miller. With the field headed by two groups, it was clear this week would be different. With a comfortable gap, the Kona/Kenwood teammates took turns driving the pace as Skerritt sat on. On the fourth lap, Wicks attacked hard - riding a steep run-up that nearly every person took on foot - but Skerritt closed down the five-second advantage with Tonkin on his wheel. Skerritt has a quick finish, so Wicks and Tonkin appeared eager to get a gap. Meanwhile, the race for fourth was still up in the air. Miller was still in front of Jonathan Myers (Team S&M), Rich Cramer (Bike-n-Hike/Presto Velo), and Sean Doyle (DeSalvo Cycles), tailed closely by teammates Mark King and Mike Schindler (Sunnyside Sports). The procession continued as the leaders took the bell at one lap to go with Tonkin in front of Wicks and Skerritt, who must have liked his chances. With a half lap to go, Wicks tried again by riding the run-up, but he was unable to dislodge the others. At the finish line, all of the spectators on the course were converging in anticipation. The finish was at the end of a long, fast section with a tight corner right before the line. With 300 meters to go, Wicks punched it hard and Skerritt jumped in his slipstream. The lanky Kona/Kenwood rider had too much left and held off Skerritt to take the first state cyclocross championship of his career - and arguably the most exciting cyclocross in years. Tonkin rolled in a few seconds behind having put in a good day's work and happy to see his protégé on top. The battle for fourth had come down to a threesome as well. Miller was able to hang on, with Cramer and Doyle trailing him in. The Battle for the BronzeFor the past several races, the Sunnyside Sports pair of Karen Kenlan and Suzanne King have tried to contain Mazza, but so far it has come to no avail. At Estacada, the tactics were to take turns attacking on the first lap to see if the Team S&M/Vanilla rider could be put on the ropes. As the field left the line, the Sunnyside jerseys were right on the front. Kenlan led the first drop into the Estacada Timber Bowl and King followed suit on the next pass. However, Mazza had something up her sleeve. On the first pass through the mud, she put her head down and in the span of 200 meters put nearly 10 seconds in hand. Next out of the bog was Alice Pennington (Trek/VW/Bike Gallery), in front of King and Amy Hunter-Dillinger (Lakeside/River's Edge), with Kenlan a few seconds back. In the thick of the action was Larssyn Staley (Saturn Development), back from her strong performances at the World Championships, who was racing 'cross for the first time in several years. Unfortunately, her day came to a premature end when she snapped her chain on lap two. Mazza, wearing her signature running shoes and using toe clips, was given the freedom she needed to put 10 seconds per lap on King in second place. After the first lap, however, all eyes were on Pennington, Kenlan and Marjon Marik (River City Bicycles) who were dicing for the bronze medal. This group was lapping nose-to-tail as the bell rang signaling the final lap. The trio stuck together through the fast section, but Pennington used her bike handling skills to shake the other two. Marik was the first to start dangling off the back under the pressure, but Kenlan was holding strong. Coming into the finish, Mazza had a sufficient gap to salute the crowd as she crossed the finish line to repeat as Oregon State Champion. King powered into the finish chute 40 seconds later. After another minute, Pennington came racing in, with Kenlan a few bike lengths back, to snare the final podium finish. Marik followed in fifth and Hunter-Dillinger in sixth. Next week, the River City Bicycles 'Cross Crusade Series welcomes the eighth and final round. The Saturn/Stumptown 'Cross Classic will be the series' second UCI-sanctioned event and is expected to attract a national-caliber field to Jackson Middle School in Portland on December 1.
