7th Annual Bio Wheels Ohio Valley Cyclocross

Cincinnati, OH, November 16, 2002

The second and final Bio Wheels cross race of 2002 weather-wise was quite similar to the race held three weeks ago: cold and wet. Luckily, the rains ceased again the morning of the race, and allowed us to only have to deal with the cold winds. After three straight weeks of slow, grinding courses on the local cross circuit, we felt it was about time for a hammer-fest. 1.5 miles of wide-open grass and pavement, with enough high-speed cornering worked in so that if one couldn't handle their bike in the wet, they lost big time in the corners. One somewhat slower section was worked in that contained two sand sections split by a hairpin and a run up. Apart from that, it was off to the races.

Beacon Health Alliance made sure that the Elite race was going to be as highly competitive as always. $600 was up for grabs today for the top 8. Lindsey Wilson was back again to wreak havoc on the field with their blisteringly high tempo on the opening laps. These guys do not waste any time splitting a field up, as they demonstrated today with Toby Swanson and Earendel Fingerson taking immediate charge along with Phil Noble (Airborne), junior Mike House (WV GoMart) and Erin Ford (Team Lake Effect). Swanson, who placed fourth at last season's collegiate cross nats, maintained an early lead over Noble, who has been consistently the fastest Midwest crosser for the past five or six years, for the first two laps. Fingerson took up third position, followed by House (National Junior Cross Champ.) and Ford (top rider out of Cleveland, OH). After three laps, a pack of seven formed in back to chase down the leaders. But the leaders had flown the coop, and the eight were left to battle amongst themselves. Mitch Graham (Bio Wheels Racing) came out of this group to finish fifth, followed closely by Al Senft (Montgomery). Chris Herndon (LWC) held onto seventh (1st MTB), and Josh Conner barely nipped Roger Wilson (CES/Schellers) at the line to round out the money. Noble pulled away from Swanson midway to secure the win. Fingerson managed third over Ford after several late stage lead changes. A great race to watch! Lindsey went 1-2 in the women's A's as well, with Tarrah Macbeth tearing away from the group followed by teammate Stephanie Ward.

The B field had six different previous winners in the mix, along with the largest total field ever - and yes it was fast. The average lap times in the front of the field were not a whole lot slower than the A's. With only one or two of last years B's moving up to the A's this year, it is no wonder why. There's some fast guys there. Jerry Witham proved the fastest, taking the win after a conservative start. Paul Muething (Team Louisville) took the conservative approach as well, overtaking a fast-starting Steven Rider (BGI-Trane) to grab second position. Rick Toler (Airborne) switched positions late in the race with Andy Bracke (Montgomery) to take fourth. Scott Stanford (CycleSport) came through sixth, and Greg Thompson (Savage Hill) outsprinted Brad Wunderlich (Team Louisville) to the line to round out the money. In the masters division, Dennis Barber won out in a close battle royale with Chip Ellison (QCW). But Chip won the rare cross bike contest of the day, sporting the aluminium Look cross frame. Or maybe it's not so rare, just in these here parts.

Junior Ben Showman (Wright Bros.) put on quite a show in beating Bio Wheels' Zach Fraser in the 16-18 juniors. Jarrett Frauhiger won the 10-12 junior category over Ambrose Dobroszi. The Tri-state C racers are edging themselves ever so closer to being placed on the endangered species list. We need more beginners! Ryan Lindsey (Queen City Wheels) took the win, followed by Weylin Ditmar and David McBride (Bluegrass Cycle Club). Winning the masters category was the grey-breasted snow owl, putting away early the three-toed tree sloth and the albino gorilla.
