Hard rain, hard racing

What an incredible start for the 2002 cyclocross season! A steady drizzle began the day prior to the race and never subsided. The Amphitheater course, which is usually brutally fast, became a mud slog of death.

The B race started with a bang as Eric Doran, chef extraordinaire from swanky Midtown restaurant The Beauty Shop, crashed into the first barrier. Hey Eric - we thought the restaurant's motto was "Look Good. Eat Good."

Dean Freeman and Forest Owens completely obliterated the pack, finishing one/two respectively. Looks like they'll have fun sucking wheel in the A race next week. Points leaders for the B race are now Jim Sullivan, Earl Glazer and Dennis Korzekwa.

The C Race was hotly contested with Beau Rathburn, Stephen Franklin and Dustin Finley duking it out for the top spots. And what a field - 13 starters and 12 finishers!

The Women's Race was no sweat for local triathlete Laurie Terrell. She handily won the category, followed by first timers Cathy Baker and Bobbie Hembree, along with returning 'crosser Bridgett Brown.

A Race participants were greeted with well-formed rutts and a harder rain. Russ Griffin and Boomer Leopold took turns at the front before Russ created a 20 second gap after lap 3. Ben Peacock held on to third place for several laps before giving up position to John McLauchlin in lap 5.
