Jesse Anthony scores another 'cross title

By Rob Karman

The U23 mens race which was billed as a showdown between defending champion Jesse Anthony (cyclocrossworld.com) and Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly) who spent most of the season in Belgium this year. Early in lap one it was Troy Wells in the lead with Powers just behind, but once Anthony made his way through traffic he bolted to the front and never looked back. Powers was able to hold him a 5 seconds for two thirds of the race, but could never close the gap and with one and a half laps to go the elastic broke and Anthony rode away for his 6th consecutive National Cyclo-Cross Championship after 4 straight as a junior and taking the U23 title in his first try last year in Portland.

Fighting it out for third was Zach Grabowski, Matt White, Brent Bookwalter, and Troy Wells. Anthony was able to stay at least 10 seconds in front of Powers for the entire race, and rode across the finish line ahead of his opponent to a cheering crowd. The bronze medal went to Wells, while White and Bookwalter claimed the final two spots on the podium.

When congratulated at the finish by someone who said "Good ride." Anthony responded by saying, "You mean 'Good run.' I've never run so much in a 'cross race before. I probably ran about half the race."
