The Capital Cross Classic, held in the Washington, DC suburb of Reston Virginia, is the traditional season-ending race for the Verge MAC series -- and the race where season titles are decided. But this year’s UCI C2 event felt a little less like a coronation and a little more like a wedding. Not only were there tears, cake and champagne being shared by racers, but they dressed up the Verge MAC finale like a bride. There was something old (FORT factory team), something new (16 year-Old Nick Bax), something borrowed (Michael Muller) and something blue (Nick Bax again).

It's appropriate that Nick Bax made the list twice, because it was his performance on Sunday in two successive races that made the biggest impression early in the day. Bax, racing in the blue uniform of Team Hot Tubes, started the day by destroying the junior field, winning by a margin of 5:25 and animating the overall race that also included 55+ Masters, B-Masters, C-Men, and B-Women. Turning around following that 39 minute effort, Bax went straight back to the staging area and started the B-Men’s race. After first catching, and then attacking the leaders, Bax came through with a 13 second win ahead of the season’s closest sprint finish which saw Evan Ellicott (DCMTB/City Bikes) take second by a hair ahead of a disappointed Chad Totaro (Team Human Zoom/Pabst Blue Ribbon).

In the Elite Masters race, Joe Ruggery of the Freddie Fu Cycling Team out-sprinted the Fort Factory Team’s legendary Gunnar Shogren with the result that both won championships: Ruggery for the overall Elite Masters and Shogren for the 45+. Thus began the FORT factory team’s march to their third consecutive team championship title and another collection of individual titles.

In the UCI Women’s race, Mo Bruno-Roy of Independent Fabrications took the hole-shot. But, it was this season’s revelation Deidre 'Grasshopper' Winfield of Velo Bella/Kona who was able to take advantage of the course conditions for yet another significant victory. Using the hairpin turn after the pits as a launching pad, Winfield was able to blast-off down the long, paved downhill straight that followed. She was visibly faster than all of her competitors as the fast section carried the racers across a dam. Though Bruno-Roy was faster in the technical parts of the course, Winfield’s dominance on the power sections confirmed the old automobile Hot Rod adage, “you can’t beat cubic inches -- except with more cubic inches.” Behind the leaders, Melanie Swartz (Velo Bella/Kona) and Betsy Shogren (FORT Factory Team) sprinted toward a controversial third place finish. Shogren won the sprint, but was later relegated. A visibly upset Shogren was not happy. "I'm the first to admit if I did something wrong," she said later, “but I don’t feel I did anything wrong." Still the result was good enough to put the Shogren and FORT names atop another championship. Shogren, who won the 2003 and 2004 titles as Betsy Schauer, becomes the first three-time Champion, of any division, in the history of Verge MAC.

The men’s race saw a surprise when former Swiss U23 Champion Michael Muller showed up. "I’m visiting my friend Jon Hamblen," he said. Having spent the past several years in agriculture school, Muller has been using the 2006 season as his reintroduction to international cycling; and he introduced himself to American ‘cross in dramatic fashion by unexpectedly bunny hopping the barriers and crashing on the first lap. The early laps saw the front of the field repeatedly stretch and come back together before Muller and Wisconsin’s Tristan Schouten (Trek/VW/Michelin) rode away with Jon Hamblen (RGM Watches/Richard Sachs) in pursuit. With two laps to go, Hamblen finally caught the two leaders after a long chase. But the race would be won at "Gambler’s Gulch," a short run-up with two small fallen tree trunks followed by a quick downhill. As had been proven throughout the day, it was possible to ride the section but there was little benefit (and a bit of risk) in doing so -- usually. On the last lap, Muller, Schouten, and Hamblen hit Gambler’s Gulch together with Muller in front. Muller elected to ride the section while the other two ran. Running seemed to be the better choice for a couple of seconds, but then Muller exploded down the following hill while the others remounted and gained a gap that he held to the line ahead of Schouten and Hamblen.

Behind them, a championship battle ensued. With a sixth-place finish, Weston Schempf of (who else?) the FORT Factory Team was able to clinch his second Verge MAC championship (He won the Men’s "B" Championship in 2004). Afterwards, Schouten looked pleased. "I’m here for the money and the points," he grinned. Then, after pausing, he said something that was probably in the minds of all of the nearly three-hundred participants, "I can’t pass up a big race."
