So Cal Cyclocross Cup #7

Santa Barbara, CA, November 14, 2004

Race 7 marked the halfway point of the So Cal CX Cup and took place this past Sunday at Campus Pointe Industrial Park in Goleta. Everyone was treated to an exceptionally beautiful day, which again brought a record number of racers - almost doubling from last year. The 1.9 mile course was fast, wide open, but with plenty of twisting to slow you down. The highlight of the course was "the fault" climb which then dropped down to a tight left into a grassy section looping back up to the Amtrak hill. The course then twisted its way to a double barrier section, into the parking lot finish.

It was a special day because So Cal CX Sponsor Chris Kelly and family came to experience So Cal Cross first hand. Chris is a frame builder, designer, creator of Kelly Bike Company and the Knobby X, which is well represented in So Cal by five-time district champ Dorothy Wong. The San Diego gang at Bike 101 give it plenty of exposure also! If that wasn't enough, National Champion Pro MTBer, Tara Llanes (Giant) was making her first appearance in cyclocross. Putting the last parts on her bike only the night before, Tara took it to the So Cal CX scene in the women's race, closely challenging Dorothy and finishing second on the day. More to come from Ms. Llanes for sure!

In the men's A race, So Cal Champ, Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/Salsa) came to play, as he's been tearing it up at the national races for most of the season. Brent finished first, but not before Leo Sandoval (Bicycle John's/Salsa) broke away from the group, only to be caught by Brent, relegating him to second place. Local hero and pro elite road racer, Ryan Yee (Bicycles of Ojai) finished third. Celo Pacific dominated the top 5 with Jeff Herring and John Behrens finishing fourth and fifth respectively. State Champ Emilio Cervantes (Raleigh) won the 35+ event while Charles Morris (Celo Pacific) with a win in the 45+ race continues to chase down Jonathan Livesay (PAA/Merrill Lynch) in series points. Jason Vorell (Encore Credit) leads the killer B's with a second place finish to Paul Welsh (Celo Pacific). First time crosser Frayser Haylet (Simply Fit) won the C race.
