For the second day in a row, the Gearworks/Spin Arts duo of Marianne Stover and Anna Milkowski overpowered the Elite Women's field to claim their second one-two finish of the weekend. As she did in the previous day's Saturn Classic, Stover established a sizeable gap on the first lap and hammered on to extend that lead out to approximately one minute over teammate Milkowski. Hanging tough in third place was Amber Itle (Wissahickon) who had also put in a strong ride the day before for a top five finish. The battle for fifth place was waged between Betsy Schauer (Fort/GPOA) and Sami Fournier (Velo Bella). In the closing stages of the race, Schauer encountered mechanical difficulties but a textbook-perfect bike change, enabled her to maintain contact with Fournier. On a fresh bike, Schauer attacked and Fournier was unable to match the acceleration. Schauer rolled in solo to round out the top five. In the Elite Men's race, Ryan Trebon (Kona) had thirty seconds on the field by the end of the first lap. That lead grew to two minutes at one point in the race and then hovered between one and two minutes all the way to the finish. With the absence of Todd Wells (Mongoose/Hyundai), whom he had battled the day before, Trebon cruised to victory and scored his second win in two days. Those two wins vaulted Trebon into the Vergegear.com Mid-Atlantic series leader's jersey. Although Trebon was riding his own race, behind him was a battle royale. A group consisting of Jeff Weinert ( Cane Creek/Tailwind), Jonathan Card (Cane Creek/Tailwind), Ben Turner (7Up/Maxxis), Mike Yozell (Wissahickon) and Ryan Leech (Fort/GPOA) had formed and stayed intact for several laps. As the race wore on, Leech was the first to pop and lost contact with the group. Weinert was the next to go as the pace continued to quicken. Heading into the final lap, Card, Turner, and Yozell were still together. As they cleared the final off-camber section and headed out onto the last stretch to the finish, they were still together. Realizing it was now or never, Yozell kicked it up a gear and pounded towards the final climb to the finish. He passed under the Red Bull arch just ahead of Turner and Card to claim second. Turner nipped Card to take third and Weinert finished fifth. In the Masters 35+ race, it also came down to a sprint with Rob Hacker (Lite Bites) out sprinting EJ Sigety (Speedgoat) and Eric Schlauch (Somerset Wheelmen) to take the win. Other winners of the day included George (Skip) Menard (Snow Valley) in the Men's B class, Laura Hanlon (Fuji) in the Women's B race and Brian Webster (SVVC) in Men's C. Kyle Hammaker (High Speed Cycling) won the Juniors' race. Next week the series moves to Highland Park, New Jersey for Highland Park CX (UCI). Racing starts at 10:00am.
