The stakes were a bit higher this time around in the second Bio Wheels race at Harbin Park: $1200 in prize money, faster riders in attendance, and Ohio State titles going out. The atmosphere was also a touch more festive, with Chad Irey making an encore appearance at the grill (sacrificing his state title in the A's in the process), Ed Rosser back on the mic, and lots of carnage out on the race course.

The course was run in reverse direction from last time, and created a much faster overall pace. There were a couple of good humps out there, but for the most part it was off to the races. Twenty-five sharp turns also had an effect on the tempo, as well as creating a nice, spectator-friendly spectacle of riders snaking all around the park. The most carnage, as always, was in the sand pits on the first laps. Riders went flying all over the place through the sand, and more than one collision and face-plant were caught on film. One of the more challenging sections was the "Red Bull Cut-Back," where riders came downhill, under the big arch, through a dip, off their bikes at 10+mph, over two hurdles, then immediately cut left, and then right. More than one rider felt like their soles were going to rip right off of their shoes. Fun stuff, though.

Thankfully, beginner fields were up over last race, so there was actually some nice racing to watch at 11:00. The beginner class got "schooled" by 18-year old Brian Nieport (Airborne.net), who shot around the course in his first local cross race of the year. David Hays gave chase the entire 30 minutes, never letting a big gap open up. Brian took the win by a mere two seconds. Lars Anderson, DA Fleischer, and John Thomas were the top three Ohio finishers in the C class. Kim Biedermann and Sharon Petko-Bunney were the top finishers in the women's beginner category. Jarett Frauhiger and Gareth Petko-Bunney rounded out the top three behind Nieport in the junior race.

The Men's B race gets better and better every year. With the B's and the 35+ masters running together, there was lots of action in the 45 minutes of racing. The second sand trap was the source of the first splits in the field, as collisions between riders caused small gaps to open up. Riders in the front took full advantage. 7 riders managed to get a nice split on the field, and all seven riders managed to stay together nearly the entire race. Mark Hooten (Midwest Flyers) did most of the pacemaking out there, but he was followed closely by Brad Wunderlich (Team Louisville), Jonas Root (Saturn of Toledo), Joe Bellante (Bio Wheels), Gavin Camp (CES-Schellers), Scott Stanford (Cycle Sport), and Tim McKay (unattached). Although there were some accelerations and some riders getting spit off, with two laps to go it was still all riders together. Jonas Root wound it up and took the sprint to win the overall and the B category. Brad Wunderlich gave everything he had to come across the line in a photo finish with Mark Hooten, but the judges gave the 35+ category to the workhorse Hooten. The top three B finishers for Ohio State were Jonas Root, Mark Lauterwasser (Bio Wheels), and Kurt Smits (unattached). The top three in 35+ for Ohio were Mark Hooten, Scott Stanford, and Rick Toler (Airborne.net).

The day concluded with the running of the A's at 1:00pm. The pace was noticeably quicker from the gun than race #1, with Mike House (CSK America), Phil Noble (Airborne.net), and Steve Carwile (Lindsay Wilson College) immediately getting a gap within a half-lap. The rest of the field was together until the second sand-trap, where a couple of collisions and tumbles divided the field into small groups. Ben Sharpe (West Virginia), Mitch Graham (Bio Wheels), and Kevin Attkisson (Texas Roadhouse) made the junction up to a lone Steve Carwile after 3 or so laps. TJ Turner (Airborne.net), Bob Bobrow (Texas Roadhouse), Al Senft (NUVO-BAP) Roger Wilson (CES) and Charley Miller (Bio Wheels) formed another group a minute or so back. Noble and House watched each other through 2/3rds of racing, until Noble lost his back wheel exiting the Red Bull area, leaving House in front with a small gap. House saw the opportunity, and put the hammer down. Although Noble chased hard, House hold steady to secure a six-second win, and the overall Ohio State Title. The second group saw some shaking up, with Attkisson losing contact before midway. Sharpe was the next to lose contact, after biting it coming through the first sand pit. Carwile and Graham made an effort to drop for good, but Sharpe was able to make it back on for the finale. Carwile got the best of the two in the finish.

We couldn't have asked for a better race, and the Bio Wheels team thanks all the racers and spectators for coming out! Look for more good racing at Harbin in '04.
