Saturday's heavy rains combined with the day's strong northeast winds created a fast, tacky circuit, which was run in the opposite direction of Saturday's race. The cold and damp conditions did little to slow down Tilford, who is preparing to race in New Zealand later this month. "This weather is very similar to what we will experience in Auckland," commented Tilford prior to Sunday's race. "Today will be great training for next week." The start of the 60-minute Men's A event mirrored saturday's race with Tilford and LBC/Highgear rider, Tony Wilhelm charging off the line and stretching the field heading on to the trail portion of the 1-mile circuit. Powering into the first turn, Wilhelm slid and was forced to unclip to avoid falling. Tilford pounced on Wilhelm's misstep getting out of the saddle and stringing out the 11 man field with only HRRC-Specialized teammate Bill Stolte, LBC/Highgear rider Jay Thomas and a resilient Wilhelm able to match the surge. After only three laps, Tilford extended his lead on the three man chase group and lapped all of the riders in the field except for Stolte, who finished second overall. Thomas crossed in third with Wilhelm fourth and Monkeywrench Cycles/KONA rider, Jesse Petersen rounding out the podium in fifth. Other top finishers included: Troy Krause (LBC/Highgear) in Men B, Randall Christ (BBC/Bike Way) in Men C, Stephen Songer (Team X) in Men Masters 35+, Tom Price (TREK Store of KC) in Men Masters 45+, John Dean (LBC/Highgear) in Men Masters 55+, Chris Locke (Cowtown Cycling) in Singlespeed, Catherine Walberg (Team Kenda) in the Women's race and Alex Kintner (LBC/Highgear) in Junior Men 13-15. The weekend's races doubled as Rounds 3 & 4 of the Mid-America Cross Cup, www.midamericacrosscup.com The regional series, which includes events in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri concludes November 5-6 in Leavenworth, KS and Kansas City, MO. The Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues November 19-20 in Lincoln at Pioneers Park. Local results 2004 |
