Sparkling late summer weather greeted over 260 starters at last Sunday's first round action of the "Bay Area Super Prestige Series" at Candlestick Point in San Francisco. Southern California champ Brent Prenzlow carried away the Elite Men's title after jousting with Ben Jacques-Maynes for the first half of the Elite Men's event. Gina Hall resumed her successful 2003 season (3rd at Portland Nationals and 3rd straight trip to the Worlds) with an opening round victory to give a slight rest to retirement stories from the end of the 2003 season. The 2.5 km course on reclaimed land next to the 49'ers football stadium made the most of the small ridges left over from the post-WWII landfill. Fields started under the "Red Bull" inflated arch and had a comfortable 400 meters dodging ground squirrels before their first significant turns and the approach to a sandy field that contained the "Bianchi Barricades". The next kilometer contained 3 short climbs up the low ridges that led to almost 600 meters of pavement before the course returned to the S/F stadium. In the Elite Men's race Jacques-Maynes led for the first 5 laps before perhaps a lapse in concentration regarding his upcoming wedding left an opening that Prenzlow exploited to the max, gaining a 28 second victory margin at the end of the Red Zone hour. John Funke, who doubled in Portland last December with a top-10 Nationals in Masters 35 and top-20 in the Elite Men, took the bronze position with a finish 30 seconds adrift of Ben J-M, and then 2 of last years breakout riders, Josh Snead and Aaron Odell stormed along to take the 4th and 5th steps on the podium, For Hall, it was déjà vu 2003 - immediate lead and hold off the challengers, this year with her mate from past seasons, Carmen D'Aluisio, on the sidelines and really retired from 'cross - notwithstanding her T-Mobile ride just 2 weeks earlier with the WEBCOR team. Northern California's next 'cross generation chased Hall throughout the day with Velo Bella teammates Barbara Howe and Sarah Kerlin earning silver and bronze. Round 2 of the series will return to Candlestick Point on October 24th for a course that will share some familiar paths as well as enjoy some new trailblazing from the Pilarcitos Cyclesports course staff. Round 3 travels just 2 miles south to Sierra Point in Brisbane and early fall rain should soften some of the hard edges of this next circuit before the series has its "Homecoming" event at Coyote Point on December 4th and 5th with their lucrative UCI prize packages.
